Rum is a huge part of the Bajan history and culture, with many cultural heritage sites to discover the story of sugar and rum. .
Due to the islands mainly flat landscape and good soil, Barbados has successfully grown sugar from mid-17th century. Rum was actually first created, in very early form, by plantation slaves as they discovered that molasses (a byproduct of the sugar refining process) could be fermented into a crude liquor called ‘rumbillon’ .
In 1703, an English businessman set up the world’s first properly commercial rum distillery in Barbados which refined the liquor into delicious rum…That man was Sir John Gay, with the now world renowned Mount Gay Rum.

Barbados Rum Shops are woven into Barbadian history and culture, going back 300 years or more. Rum was
perfected in Barbados; the process of cold pressing and distilling rum from cane juice was a Barbadian innovation.
There are thousands of rum shops all over the island, several in every village. Soon after the island was settled in
1627, the rum trade flourished and it’s said there was one rum shop for every 20 inhabitants of the island.

Rum plays a part in the culture of Barbados and most islands of the West Indies, as well as in The Maritimes and Newfoundland. This beverage has famous associations with the Royal Navy (where it was mixed with water or beer to make grog) and piracy (where it was consumed as bumbo). Rum has also served as a popular medium of economic exchange, used to help fund enterprises such as slavery, organized crime, and military insurgencies (e.g., the American Revolution and Australia's Rum Rebellion).

Ham cutter - A Barbados cutter is sort of like a sandwich but much, much better! It begins with a Bajan salt bread, a freshly baked bread roll with a crusty exterior and soft, fluffy interior. It is sliced in the middle and filled with thickly cut slices of ham (either leg ham or picnic ham) You can add either pepper sauce and or ketchup to your liking.

The classic “rum shop” is the quintessence of the warmth, flavor and spirit of the island. “. “This is Barbados.” Rum has been part of the rich history and identity of the island for more than 350 years. British author Richard Ligon first mentioned the drink when he arrived on Barbados in 1647, describing the spirit as “rumbullion, alias kill-divill… a hott hellish and terrible liquor”. Until tasting the liquid after shipping it to Europe, the smooth taste of aging was discovered. Rum bullion was soon shortened to “rum”, and today it remains a lifeblood of our island. “Rum is one of the pillars of Bajan culture".

As the name suggests this tour is strictly local and provides visitors with a truly Authentic Barbados Experience. As such, this tour exposes our guests to Traditional Rum Shops, Traditional Bajan (people), Traditional Food and Local Beverages. But even more, our 'visiting friends' have the opportunity to be part of our Culture, and Heritage.

The tour incorporates on bus fun activities, games and competitions. While the tour is fun it is also educational and informative, allowing for a fun learning environment.

We began by introducing ourselves at the Historical Garrison Savannah. Speaking about the importance of St. Ann's Forte which was major base for the British Naval forces in the Caribbean back in 1650 through till 1905. St. Ann's Forte protected the Bridgetown harbor from pirate attacks. While our tour guide spoke, everyone enjoyed a glass of SBRST Rum Punch made with Cockspur 130. Cockspur was chosen for our Rum Punch because Cockspur was once synonymous with horse racing at the Garrison Savannah.

We left the Garrison Savannah in light spirits as we headed to our first stop in Edy Village for delicious Ham Cutters at R.K's Variety.

The tour moved on to Buffy's Bar in Inch Marlow Ch Ch where we were greeted by Buffy himself. On the way there, they were regaled by the tour guide on the history of Barbados as it relates to our Rum Culture and Heritage.

While on the bus the minute anyone's glass became empty, it was quickly refilled with none other than our local rums... chasers, Water, Mauby, Passion Fruit or Mango Juice and Claytons Kola Tonic. Of course as Barbados is the Home of Rum!!

At the last, Stop Bright Light Bar in Dover Ch Ch. they enjoyed a hearty lunch, Marlin, rice and peas or Macaroni pie with fresh salad. Shortly after, a cocktail demonstration and rum sampling. Cocktail was made with Doorly's Rum, Mango Juice, lime juice, Falernum, and spices. Barbados Rums that were sampled: ESA Fields, Old Brigand, Cockspur Spiced Rum, Cockspur Old Gold, Mount Gay Mauby Rum, Mount Gay Silver, Mount Gay Eclipse. Not to forget Claytons Kola Tonic was also there as chaser.
