Lachung means the 'Small Pass' (so there must be a 'Big Pass' as well? Yes, it's another place called Lachen. From Chunthang a road bifurcates and leads towards Lachen). Lachung is a small mountain village at an altitude of 8,610ft and located about 118kms from Gangtok. Although the distance looks easy, it takes about 6 hours by car to reach Lachung from Gangtok, and the road although very scenic, is often not in good condition. Lachung is part of North Sikkim.
The residents of Lachung who are mostly Bhutias call themselves Lachungpas. They have their own self governing body known as 'Dzumsa' to settle all social and other disputes through consensus.
On your way to Lachung, you had crossed the town of Chungthang which is about 22kms away. You should take a halt here and watch the lovely confluence of the rivers Lachung and Lachen chhus which then join the river Teesta. Nearby there is a sacred stone (Naydo) having footprints of guru Padmasambhava. Visit the Chungthang Monasterysurrounded by stone houses and large edifices. The monastery has rich collection of rare Buddhist paintings. Other things to see here are the many waterfalls coming down the rock faces, lush forested landscapes and scenic views all around.
About 11kms ahead of Chungthang (30 minutes drive) you will come across a wonderful waterfall along the way known as Bhim Nala (also known as Amitabh Bachchan Waterfalls because a scene of the film 'Ankhen' was shot here with Amitabh in it). Take a break here for 10 minutes and enjoy the lovely view of the fall roaring down from high above and splashing into the ground near you. The sound of the gushing water can be heard from far and the water is cold. There is an wooden platform made by the villagers (with bamboo and logs) so that you can go close to the waterfall.

Gangtok is a hill town located in the state of Sikkim at an altitude of 5,410 ft. Although Sikkim had been under the Namgyal dynasty since 1642, it was only in 1894 when the king Thutob Namgyal transferred the capital of Sikkim to Gangtok and then it became the center of Royal administration. In 1975 Sikkim joined India as the 22nd state and Gangtok became the Capital of Sikkim.

Gangtok is located in East Sikkim. The name Gangtok means the 'Top of the Ridge'. Over the years Gangtok has experienced booming economy and advancement of lifestyle. However it has remained as a peaceful place with a mix of different cultures and ethnicity. While Lepchas are the original inhabitants, they have been out numbered by immigrant Nepalis and Bhutias. Gangtok presently has an estimated resident population of over 160,000.

Gangtok spreads over a forested mountain that faces the Kanchenjunga snow peaks. There are many vantage points in and around Gangtok from where you get magnificent views of Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan snow peaks. In fact every spur extending from this hill town offers a setting of a great sight.

Zuluk (also spelt as Dzuluk) is a tiny village settlement at an altitude of 10,100ft. It's located in lower Himalayas of Eastern Sikkim on the historic old Silk Route which once connected India with Tibet. On the Indian side, the Silk route starts from Pedong in Kalimpong district and goes through places like Rhenock, Rongli, Zuluk and northward to Nathang valley and Kupup, and finally Jelepla Pass was used to reach beautiful Chumbi valley of Tibbet and then onward to Lhasa.

Till the first half of 20th century before the Chinese invaded Tibet, this old Silk Route was used heavily to trade silk, fur and wool between Tibet and India, and hence such name of the route. But since 1962, Jelepla Pass has been closed. Now the official corridor between India and China in this area is Nathula Pass which is not far away.

Zuluk is only few kilometers away from the China border and has a base of Indian army. It's a small mountain hamlet with a population of about 700 most of who are Nepali. All these people had migrated to this place in search of better living as it lied on the Silk Route. But now that the trade is gone, and the land is infertile for any farming, they mostly survive on construction of roadways. But the nature has been liberal in blessing the place with huge tourism potential. The villagers have slowly started realizing that and extending their homes to tourists as home stays.

There are 32 sharp hairpin bends (or zig zags) along the way which is an engineering marvel by itself. You can get the sight of this amazing zig zags on the mountain slopes from vantage points near Zuluk and also from the Thambi View Point itself.
