Sreemangal Upazila (maulvi bazar district) with an area 450.74 sq km, is bounded by maulvi bazar sadar upazila on the north, Tripura State (India) on the south, kamalganj upazila on the east, chunarughat and bahubal upazilas on the west. Administration Sreemangal thana, now an upazila, was established in 1912. The upazila consists of one municipality, 12 union parishads, 124 mouzas and 206 villages. Archaeological heritage Nirmmai Shib Bari (1454 AD), Tamrashasan of Raja Marundanath (11th century, discovered in village Kalapur) and statue of Ananta Naraiyan (discovered during excavation in village Lamua); both the Tamrashasan and the atatue of Ananta Narayan are now preserved in the Calcutta Museum. Historical events Once Sreemangal was a part of the Tripura State. The great earthquake of 1897 caused a massive change in the physiography of the area. Religious institutions Mosque 164, temple 38, church 1. Population 230889; male 51.76%, female 48.24%. Muslim 52.77%, Hindu 44.87%, Christian 2.21%, Buddah 0.07% and others 0.08%.
