Shyamnagar Zaminder Bari,Satkhira,Bangladesh.
Once, Jashahor (present Satkhira and Jessore districts) was a princely state of south Bengal. Maharaja Pratapaditya was its king and his capital was located at present-day Dhumghat village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira. After the fall of Pratapaditya, Haricharan Roy Chowdhury became the most influential and wealthy zamindar (landlord) of southern Bengal from 1885 to 1915.

The zamindar built a palatial house in 1888 at Nakipur village in Shyamnagar upazila. Locally known as ‘Nakipur Zamindar Bari’, it is about 62km northeast of Satkhira city. According to historical records, the entire Nakipur estate comprised 200,000 lakh acres of land that spread from Hingalganj in West Bengal, India to Shyamnagar in Satkhira.

Haricharan Roy didn’t spend his life enjoying wealth and luxury. He carried out a number of activities, including excavating water reservoirs, building roads and planting trees, for people’s welfare. He was a strong promoter of education and several educational institutions were established with his financial support. Among these, Nakipur HC (Haricharan Chowdhury) Minor School is notable. Established in 1899, it is now known as Nakipur Pilot High School.

When the zamindar died in 1915, Nakipur estate was run by his two sons, who too died in 1937 and 1949 respectively. The zamindari system was abolished in 1950, and Haricharan Roy’s descendants moved to West Bengal in 1954. Since then, the zamindar house lies abandoned.

According to Charu Chandra Mondal, a retired headmaster and writer, the house was built on 12 bigha (about four acres) of land, and included a garden house. It was a massive L-shaped three-storied building, consisting of 85 rooms. There were 27 rooms on the ground floor and 58 rooms of various sizes on the top two floors. The roof was made of lime-girder. There were verandahs on all sides. There was a basement which was used for storage. There were staircases in the middle of the house and in front of the main entrance door. The ground floor was used for offices and there were sitting rooms on both sides of the stairs. There were four gates to enter the house, with a large lion gate in the front.

There was a large dighi (water reservoir) to the south of the house, but it no longer exists. On the left side of the dighi, there was a two-storied nahabatkhana (drum house), which is in ruins now. There was a small pond closer to the house for women. There are two Shiva temples on its dilapidated ghat (paved steps).

The estate now lies in ruins, with parts of its beautiful buildings still standing. One can easily visualise their past glory by observing the ruins. The spectacular L-shaped house does not exist as before, its southern part has already disappeared.

All movable property of the zamindar house has been taken away by local influential people. In the darkness of the night, bricks, precious stones, valuable iron beams and timber are stolen. In addition, women and children remove bricks during the day, but there is no one to stop them. Two local families were found living in the abandoned house during a recent visit.

The heritage house is now in a perilous condition. Initiatives are needed to preserve Nakipur Zamindar Bari now.

There was a nishada king named Nila who ruled over Mahishmati. King Nila had a daughter who was exceedingly beautiful. So much so that Agni (lord of fire) fell in love with her which was reciprocated. The princess always used to stay near the sacred fire of her father, causing it to blaze up with vigour. And king Nila's sacred fire, even if fanned, would not blaze until agitated by the gentle breath of her lips. Agni, assuming the form of a Brahman starts courting with the princess for long. But, one day the couple was discovered by the king, who became furious. Nila thereupon ordered the Brahman to be punished according to law. At this the illustrious deity flamed up in wrath and beholding the terrible flame, the king felt terrified and bent his head low on the ground. King hails Lord Agni and says he cannot punish a god who is responsible for the origin of Vedas, source of all Knowledge and Dharma. Pacified Agni then grants a boon to Nishada, and the King requests for the protection of his kingdom from any invasions. Agni swears to protect his kingdom on the condition that the king should sanctify pleasure out of pure love a legitimate action in his kingdom. Liberated from the orthodoxy of marriage as a prelude, women of Mahishmati enjoyed freedom that was then unheard off elsewhere in aryavarta.

Years later, after the epic war the victorious Yudhishthira plans on conducting a Yagna by winning over everyone else on Earth. Sahadeva, the youngest of Pandavas knowing that Lord Agni was protecting the Nishada kingdom, prays to Lord Agni successfully and there upon moves to Saurashtra kingdom.[5][page needed]

Of note, even to this day, the Sahasrarjun temple at Maheshwar lights 11 lamps in honour of Lord Agni blessing the Kingdom. Alternatively, this tradition is attributed to Sahasrarjun queens humiliating captive ten-headed Ravana by lighting up candles on his foreheads.

In the late eighteenth century, Maheshwar served as the capital of the great Maratha queen Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar. She embellished the city with many buildings and public works, and it is home to her palace, as well as numerous temples, a fort, and riverfront ghats (broad stone steps which step down to the river).

Jagadguru Kripaluji Maharaj has performed various akhand (continues) sankirtan outside shiva temple at maheshwar for more than months. Even though Kripaluji was from mahu (30 km from maheshwar), he frequently visited this place in his early life with devotees of lord Krishna to perform sankirtan on the banks of the Narmada river in Maheshwar.

Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, is a historic, Victorian-era Scottish Baronial mansion. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada due to its landmark status in Victoria.
Craigdarroch Castle has 39 rooms and over 25,000 square feet (2,300 m2). It was constructed in the late 1800s as a family residence for the wealthy coal baron Robert Dunsmuir and his wife Joan. Robert died in April 1889, 17 months before construction on the castle was completed. His sons Alexander and James took over the role of finishing the castle after his death. The initial architect of the castle, Warren Heywood Williams, also died before completion of the castle. His work was taken over by his associate, Arthur L. Smith, in 1890. James Dunsmuir also commissioned the construction of Victoria's second castle; Hatley Castle located in Colwood, British Columbia.
Craigdarroch Castle is believed to have cost as much as $500,000 when it was built, and included granite from British Columbia, tile from San Francisco, and an oak staircase prefabricated in Chicago. When originally constructed Craigdarroch stood in grounds comprising 28 acres (110,000 m2) of formal gardens in Victoria's Rockland neighbourhood.
Upon the death of Robert Dunsmuir's widow, Joan, the Craigdarroch estate was sold to land speculator Griffith Hughes for $38,000 who subdivided the estate into building lots.[5] To stimulate sales during a slow real estate market, Griffiths announced that the castle would be the subject of a raffle, to be won by one of the purchasers of the residential parcels carved from the estate. The winner, Solomon Cameron, mortgaged the castle to finance other speculative ventures which failed, leaving him broke, and in 1919 ownership of the castle passed to one of Cameron's creditors, the Bank of Montreal.
The four-story Craigdarroch Castle still has lavish furnishings from the 1890s and is known for its stained-glass and intricate woodwork. The Castle is currently owned by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, which is a private non-profit society, and is open to the public. The castle is a tourist attraction, and receives 150,000 visitors a year.

Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi (Uganda)
The Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi constitute a site embracing almost 30 ha of hillside within Kampala district. Most of the site is agricultural, farmed by traditional methods. At its core on the hilltop is the former palace of the Kabakas of Buganda, built in 1882 and converted into the royal burial ground in 1884. Four royal tombs now lie within the Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main building, which is circular and surmounted by a dome. It is a major example of an architectural achievement in organic materials, principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle and daub. The site's main significance lies, however, in its intangible values of belief, spirituality, continuity and identity.
