Literacy rate among the people is 38.6%. During the Mughal period Regional Administrative Centre was established in the town.

Sherpur is the city of life for those born in Sherpur. It's called “Sherpur Town” Let’s with us we try to know the history of this city ourselves and try to present it to the outside of world wide. “Sherpur district is a district in Northern Bangladesh. It is a part of Mymensingh Division. Sherpur district was a sub-division of Jamalpur District before 1984. It was upgraded to a district on February 22, 1984. Sherpur City is located about 197–199 kilometres north of Dhaka, Capital of Bangladesh.”

Sherpur region was on the southwest frontier of the kingdom of the Kamarupa in the ancient time. It was once ruled by Hindu king Dalip Samant and eventually became part of the Mughal Empire's Bengal Subah. The region was occupied by the Gazi landlords during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar this area was called "Dashkahania Baju". During the first part of the seventeenth century the Gazis of Bhawal occupied Dashkahania area from the descendants of Isa Khan. Doshkahania Pargana was named Sherpur after Sher Ali Gazi, the last jaghirdar of the Gazi dynasty. Fakir-Sannyasi Revolts were held against the East India Company and the local zamindars from the time of warren hastings to lord cornowalis; Tipu Shah, leader of the Fakir Movement, declared sovereignty in the area and established his capital at Gajripa. His many associates among the famous people of Sherpur Shah Ali Munshi was one of them. Peasant conferences were held in 1906, 1914 and 1917 at Kamarer Char of Sherpur under the leadership of Khos Muhammad Chowdhury. The communists revolted against the systems of Nankar, Tonk, Bhawali, Mahajani, Ijaradari during 1838-48 in Sherpur. In 1897 a devastating earth quack changed the course of the Brahmaputra towards the west and forced to merge it with the Jamuna; it also caused serious damages to many old buildings.

Sherpur District is rich in various natural resources. It is one of the potential districts of Bangladesh, based on natural beauty, agricultural production, cheap labor, geographical location and mineral resources. Ther are many places of interest in this district including archaeological sites and natural landscapes.

Ghajini Obokash Kendro is a famous green forest in the Sherpur district of Bangladesh, Is one of the best picnic spot In Bangladesh. Parjatan Center is 33 km far from Sherpur Town, Where you will find the natural beauty of hills, lakes, forest & lots of birds here, it is a natural tourist spot where you can see the tribal life of our tribes. You can enjoy boating in the lake and also there is a natural waterfall what you will like to watch. Ghajini is one of the finest national park and forest reserve in the norther eastern Bangladesh. The Ghajini center lies right next to the nearing Indian state of Meghalaya. The watch tower gives a panaromic view of all the surrounding areas.
