Officiële facebook pagina van Theaterkostuum - Koninklijke Academie Voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerpen In recent years theatre, performance, dance, opera and film have merged into artistic hybrid forms in which different disciplines from the performing arts work together. Dressing the b

ody and the performative are central to this. In the Bachelor programme the student learns to develop a clear concept from a personal inspiration or a text. A variety of techniques are offered to realise these ideas, concepts and costumes. We expect students to be interested in social themes and the contemporary art world. An extensive theoretical basis ensures that one can develop a personal and critical vision of the performing arts in all their manifestations. In addition, the future designer will be supervised by a driven team of professionals who are involved in the various aspects of contemporary performing arts. We focus on the development of drawing skills, perception, visual communication and all profession-related techniques to design and realize costumes. In addition, we impart knowledge through practical exercises in which text analysis, dramaturgy, semiotics, character analysis, scenography, technical research and collaboration are important. Theoretical framework includes research methodology, art history, art theory, theatre history analysis techniques, analysis of the film costume and costume history. Through collaborative projects, internships, workshops and exercises, a wide range of tools is offered and the student is given the opportunity to gain practical experience in the field. The Master degree is focused on the student’s own artistic research. The graduation project is presented in a personal and professional manner in a multidisciplinary context centred on visual and performing arts. The graduate can work as an autonomous artist or, as a costume designer, seek collaborations in the world of the performing arts, performance, film and television.

Typical is the combination of image and typography in a personal way, with a lot of attention to content, challenged by the vision of the client. Sang designs for Toneelhuis, C-Mine, Modemuseum Hasselt, Brugge, MAD, Z33, Kunst aan de Maas, Werchter Boutique and among others. In addition to his design practice, Sang also teaches visual communication and was previously art director at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. Sang won the Henry van de Velde Young Talent Gold Award in 2021. 👀 Jelle Spruyt works in an artisanal manner with textiles and combines everyday objects with global expressions of how botanical materials and floral phenomena are handled: germination, growth, blooming, wilting, and decay. In a symbolic and aesthetic way, he contributes to raising awareness about environmental issues. Through the manual techniques – such as weaving and braiding – of his sculptural visual language and the use of plant-based dyes, his work gains a sustainable and tactile expression that is inevitable in its refined aesthetics. Spruyt treats textiles as a contemporary medium with a rich, multicultural history, drawing from it as if it were a library or archive. For him, it is a source that nourishes him during his travels around the world, allowing him to translate his impressions into pictorial, spatial works that, in their individual quality, display a strong sense of cohesion.

👀 Chris Snik (°1970) graduated in Costume Design from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 1996. In 1997, she obtained a postgraduate degree in Scenography. As a costume designer, Chris draws inspiration from literature, current affairs, and art. To dress the performer’s body, she explores forms, coupe, textures, materials and craftsmanship, aiming to capture the essence of the character through coupe, construction and costume design. Central to her creative making process is the close collaboration with performers. Chris works for various theatre, film and dance performances next to her work as head of the costume design department, teacher and researcher. In her two-year artistic research project Character through Coupe (2021–2023), she deepened and expanded her artistic practice as a costume designer. The findings were published in her book Slow Costuming (2023) by Borgerhoff & Lamberigts and Track Report.

👀 Sofie Durnez (Poperinge, b. 1980) is a costume designer and scenographer based in Brussels.

She graduated in 2003 with a Master’s degree in Fashion and Costume Design from KASK Ghent, earning the distinction of laureate. Over the past two decades, she has been actively engaged in the European dance and performance field, collaborating closely with artists such as Miet Warlop, Kate McIntosh, Superamas, Christophe Meierhans, Benjamin Vandewalle, Gael Santisteva, Lara Barsacq, Sara Manente, Meg Stuart, Jan Martens, and Nicolas Mouzet-Tagawa.

These collaborations often extend across multiple productions.

In the development of her own work—mixed-media landscapes and collages—she explores how theatrical codes can be applied beyond the walls of the theater and how abandoned scenographies can take on a life of their own.

👀 Zhang Feiran, Pisces, born in Changsha, China.

To create her own world, Feiran is fascinated with every magic moment relating to spirituality, mythology and femininity. She re-examined the relationship between viewers and performers through different mediums such as text, costume, and performance to create magical potions of growth, encouragement and warmth, helping the audience find their own comfortable zones.

Feiran’s master project is based on her own memory and further explores whether it is possible to create a third space that belongs exclusively to the audience and the storyteller. Memory is intimate and false, how can a visual artist bring the viewer’s perspective into a personal narrative and be “resonant” with it? How do we deal with the displacement that has always occurred in the context of personal culture, race or growth environment? She plays the role of archaeologist, on a scale of distance, time, and memory, hoping to find the best answer.

👀 Noor Denteneer was born in Hasselt, 2002. In her visual style she tends towards minimalism, creating structured costumes with a strong visual line. She likes to work technically to translate abstract concepts into a visually recognisable image.
Noor has discovered an interest in storytelling and this year she wants to explore how to apply that interest to certain themes that aren’t easily expressed in visuals. As such Noor pulls inspiration from abstract concepts and likes to work by keeping a specific term in mind while she engages in the creative and practical work. Subjects such as injustice have led to nuanced end results which require a second or third look to find the detailed layers. Portrait by

👀 Yassin Boutayeb: “I see myself as a storyteller, weaving together tradition and innovation through my designs. My work is deeply connected to my Moroccan heritage, drawing inspiration from forgotten tales, legends, and influential female figures like Aicha Kendisha, who is the focus of my master’s research. I’m fascinated by the mystery surrounding Aicha Kendisha—was she a real historical figure or a creation of folklore? Did she truly fight against the Portuguese, and how did she transform from a warrior into a figure of fear used to scare children? Most importantly, how has her legacy, even unconsciously, impacted Moroccan women today? These questions fuel my passion to uncover the truth behind her story.
My aim is not just to craft garments, but to reclaim and revitalize stories that inspire and empower, ensuring that the voices of the past continue to shape and resonate in the present.”

👀 Chiara Schmidt: Born in Germany, she completed a master’s degree in architecture and joined the Staatsschauspiel Dresden to work there as a costume design assistant, where she was also able to realize some of her own projects in the field of scenography and costume design. Her work is characterized by experimentation and a strong reference to narrative and story telling. 👀 Hi, I am Sinon Pineiros Leone (Quito, EC, 2000) and for my master project “The Impossible Flowers of My Garden”, I will be researching during my masters at . I will be reflecting on alexithymia, the inability to recognize and express emotions. I will be exploring costume, as an artistic practice, allowing the expression and the somatic-embodied restoration of neglected emotions induced by “the Alexithymic Period”. From costumes that regulate the nervous system, to care spaces, I will be constructing extensions of the soul allowing this restoration of neglected emotions, redefining the epistemology of these. 👀 Charlotte Hannes: Charlotte Maria Hannes is a Belgian costume designer and visual artist based in Antwerp, where she aims to share her vibrant artistic vision. She utilizes second-hand materials to explore themes of colour, shape, and texture, drawing on her love of knitting and crochet to address topics like childhood trauma, activism, and women’s rights. For her master’s project, she examines femininity through handiwork, seeking to highlight the often-overlooked significance of traditionally feminine crafts. Charlotte intends to challenge the perception that these domestic mediums are less valid as art forms, aiming to foster discussions that elevate craft as a legitimate art practice. Her work is inspired by memories of watching her grandmother knit and embroider. Ultimately, she hopes to honour the legacy of women artisans everywhere. h.a.r.l.o.t.j.e Portrait by

👀 Lisette Sivard: Lisette Sivard (b. 1999) is a fashion and costume designer who has studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts and completed part of her studies in body design at FAVU in Brno. Her work almost always stems from the feeling of being ‘less’—feeling smaller or less important than others, experiencing a sense of being left behind or overlooked, and embodying otherness. She often seeks to address unequal positions and the pressing social, political, and mental conditions that many individuals face. She approaches her works through empathetic absurdity and melancholic humour.
She is pretty sure that at some point in her life she will eventually move to the countryside and become an art teacher. Portrait by

👀 Pablo koenig: “Before starting his Pre-Master at the Costume Department, Pablo studied Moving Image at ArtEZ. The intersection between these two different Mediums and ways of working is oftentimes central in the approach he takes towards his work. While treating the body as a photographic object, he explores themes of Optical Vision, Impermanence and transformation of the Body.” Portrait by
