PB – Tourism figures summer holiday 2024

Just before the end of the summer holidays, Bruges takes stock of the past two months.

Based on mobile data counts, 1.74 million visitors are expected to have visited the historic city centre in July and August. Compared to the summer holidays in 2023, this is an increase of 6%. Domestic tourism increased slightly by 1%, the number of foreign visitors increased by 9%.

76% of the visitors were day trippers. This type of visitor increased the most: 8% compared to last summer. Stay-over tourism accounts for 13% of the visitors. Together they realised a total of 378,000 overnight stays in the city, 4% less than last summer holiday. Finally, the share of day trippers was 11%, these are not tourists in the sense that is given to it but visitors from the surrounding municipalities who, because of the city's central function, come to the city centre to take in an event, enjoy a culinary experience or to go shopping.

On average, 34,000 visitors were counted in the city centre on a daily basis. Alderman for Tourism Mieke Hoste: “Manageable outliers were mainly on Saturdays. For the other days, the visitor volumes were fairly evenly spread. That ensured that it remained pleasant to stay in the city. However, more active management of the visitor segments that cause the crowds remains important to keep the city attractive for permanent residents but also for temporary residents who are residential tourists.”
