Place du Luxembourg, often referred to as "Place Lux" or "Plux," is a notable square in Brussels' European Quarter. Situated primarily in the municipality of Ixelles, with a portion extending into the City of Brussels, it lies between Rue d'Arlon/Aarlenstraat and Rue du Luxembourg/Luxemburgstraat.

Historically, Place du Luxembourg was established in 1855 alongside the opening of the Quartier Léopold train station. Designed by architect Antoine Trappeniers, the square was integrated into an urban plan by town planner Tilman-François Suys in 1838. The area features neoclassical facades and a central monument dedicated to John Cockerill, dating back to 1872.

In recent years, the square has become a vibrant after-work hub, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings, attracting European bureaucrats and journalists. The numerous bars and restaurants around the square contribute to its lively atmosphere.

Notably, in March 2024, the central green space of Place du Luxembourg underwent restoration due to damage from foot traffic and events, including farmer protests. The refurbishment aimed to return the area to its original design, featuring a new lawn, four magnolia trees, and perennial flower beds.

For dining options, Be Burger offers a variety of gourmet burgers, while Terra & Mar provides tapas and seafood selections. Parking is available at BePark - Parking Place du Luxembourg (Hôtel Renaissance).

Why is Belgium the Home of Chocolate?

When it comes to chocolate, Belgium is a name that stands out. But have you ever wondered why this small country has earned such a sweet reputation? Let’s dive into what makes Belgian chocolate so special.

A Rich History
Belgium’s chocolate legacy dates back to the 1600s when cocoa was brought to Europe. Over time, Belgian chocolatiers perfected their craft, creating unique methods and recipes that set them apart from the rest of the world.

The Birth of Pralines
One of the biggest milestones in chocolate history happened in Belgium in 1912. Jean Neuhaus invented the praline – a filled chocolate that revolutionized the industry. Today, pralines are synonymous with Belgian chocolate and remain a symbol of its innovation.

Uncompromising Quality
Belgium has strict standards for its chocolate. From sourcing the best cocoa beans to following traditional techniques like slow grinding, every step ensures a product that’s pure, rich, and unmatched in flavor.

2,000+ Chocolate Shops
With more than 2,000 chocolatiers across the country, Belgium is truly a chocolate lover’s paradise. From world-famous brands like Godiva and Neuhaus to artisanal boutiques, you’ll find chocolates to suit every taste.
