💎The Atomium is a symbol of Belgium and its city, Brussels. It consists of nine enormous steel balls connected by thin tubes. The extraordinary architectural structure was designed to resemble an iron crystal 165 billion times its original size. The gravity-defying Atomium, the crown jewel of the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, has remained a distinguishing feature of the city's skyline. The artwork is currently located on the Heysel Plateau in Laeken, a northern suburb of Brussels where the expo was held.

📌Ultimately, the Belgian contribution to the First World War would be characterised by a four-year stalemate in and around Ypres, intermittently interrupted by exceptionally brutal battles. On the battlefield, weapons of mass destruction such as chlorine gas and mustard gas – named Yperite by the French – were tested for the first time in history. In Ypres, flamethrowers were utilised for the first time, and the 1917 conflict known as the Battle of Passchendaele became notorious for its large number of losses (over 500,000) and the mud that rendered tanks and men immobile. The numerous monuments, museums, and cemeteries of Ypres remain as silent witnesses to the fiercest fighting of the First World War. Since 1927, it has been customary for the local fire department to sound "the Last Post" each night from beneath the Menin Gate memorial. The trumpeted tribute at precisely 8:00 p.m. is a memorial to the warriors who sacrificed their lives fighting for Belgium's independence.

✨In the fall of 1914, the siege of Antwerp signalled the scramble to secure the coast. Belgian troops opened the floodgates of Nieuwpoort on October 25, inundating the low-lying terrain on which the German army stood, while attempting to block passage to ally France. The scene quickly degenerated into a chaotic, muddy mess. There was no likelihood of a rapid German advance, but the ultimate stand came at a cost. A dismal four-year period of trench warfare had begun, exemplified by the eerie 'Trench of Death' at Dixmude, the last remains of the trench system etched into the seashore terrain.

✨After the swift collapse of Leuven and Brussels, the next stronghold to fall was Antwerp. On the night of September 27, when the first bombs were dropped on the city, King Albert II, who had taken up residence in Antwerp's palace on the Meir, thought the city's chances of survival were slim and retreated to the territory behind the Yser river. Given the neutrality agreement between the Allies, Antwerp's hopes rested on France and Britain coming to the rescue, but the German Schlieffen Plan to capture Belgium was all about momentum, and on October 10th, Antwerp officials were obliged to capitulate. The Breendonk Fortress, one of the forts in its defence ring, has been preserved as a national memorial and is open to the public.

💎The city of Aarschot, where German troops gathered before marching on Leuven, was not so much a battlefield as it was a particularly harrowing chapter of the invasion of Belgium. Belgian soldiers had already abandoned the city before the controversial leader Colonel Stenger and his infantry arrived. The colonel is killed in a flurry of random gunfire while observing his men gathered on the market square from the balcony of the mayor's mansion. In an act of vengeance, German troops kill more than 150 civilians in Aarschot while the rest of the population flees, transforming the small city into a ghost town.

🌟By attacking the neutral Belgian city of Liège on August 4, 1914, Germany ignited the already combustible powder keg of tense international relations and sparked the First World War. However, the incredibly confident army's first effort to break the small country's entrance failed. In a brief David and Goliath situation, Germany sustained serious losses until August 16 at the hands of a vastly outnumbered Belgian force firing from 12 forts surrounding the city. Eventually, these would be seized with the aid of howitzers and Big Bertha artillery.

💎The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, which has been stolen a record 13 times by looting armies and art-hungry N***s, among others, did not earn the title of "world's most prized artwork" by accident. The 12-panel altarpiece by Renaissance brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, which has resided in Ghent's Saint Bavo's Cathedral since 1432, has travelled more than most individuals will in a lifetime. As one of the earliest large-scale oil paintings ever created and one illustrating Catholic mythology in exquisite detail, the artwork's fame quickly spread across the continent. Over the course of six centuries, it was seized by Napoleonic armies, a prankster vicar from Ghent, the N***s, and finally the Monuments Men, who returned it to its rightful location over sixty years ago. In the meantime, Saint-Cathedral Bavo's in Ghent had become an esteemed repository of more religious art, including a Rubens altarpiece and a celebrated Rococo pulpit.

💠As the unfortunate Belgian province endured four years of muddy trench warfare during World War I, the Ypres Salient is littered with memorials commemorating the more than half a million troops who perished in no man's land in Flanders. The Menin Gate and its dramatic Last Post Ceremony are among the most significant. Every night at precisely 8:00 p.m. since 1928, local buglers have played beneath the Hall of Memory. The fourth verse of For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon is then read aloud, concluding appropriately with "we will remember them." The subsequent minute of silence cannot help but underscore the significance of this daily ritual.

🌟In comparison to the numerous war memorials scattered throughout Belgium, the Plugstreet football is noticeably more cheery. The simple memorial, a soccer ball atop a rust-colored pedestal, is reminiscent of a Christmas miracle. On the evening of December 23, 1914, more than one hundred thousand soldiers from both sides of the Western Front emerged from their muddy trenches waving white flags and proceeded to celebrate Christmas by singing carols and playing soccer. In the little Walloon town of Ploegsteert – or "Plugstreet" to the British – in Belgium, one of the most well-known of these games took place, and many soldiers' diaries contain recollections of this particular game. Helmets were used as makeshift goalposts, Scots played in kilts without undergarments, and English whisky was exchanged for German sausage in what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described as a "human moment amid all the crimes that have tarnished the memory of war."

💎The city centre of Bruges, which frequently appears on lists of the best-preserved European cities, has slept soundly through modernity. Once a prosperous trade harbour in the Middle Ages, its step-gabled homes, winding canals, and magnificent Belfry escaped the claws of modernisation in the 15th century when its lifeline river sank. Three centuries later, British travellers on their route to Waterloo found the peaceful village, and in 2000 the entire centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

✨On June 18, 1815, Napoleon's armies engaged a combination of British, German, Dutch, and Belgian forces on the battlefields of Waterloo, located around 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) south of Brussels. After eight hours, the business was concluded. In a decisive victory that was largely the result of good timing – Marshal von Blücher's Prussian forces dealt a crippling blow to Napoleon's right flank at a crucial moment – the international alliance led by the Duke of Wellington ended the French dominance of Europe and ushered in a period of relative peace that lasted nearly a decade. A monumental lion statue proudly sits on its mound in the heart of the battlefield today. The audio guides and tours provide more insight into one of the continent's final close-quarters wartime conflicts.
