THE EAGLE HAS LANDED

Zandberg's make-over comes to an end.

The characteristic public pump from the Napoleonic era was again placed on its original location.

It consists of an imposing obelisk with an imperial eagle on the globe.

The eagle has an eye for the surrounding area: a police station, historical Hotel Vanden Meersche - now Dada Chapel - and the Royal Music Conservatory.

Today was the very last day of the Pop Art Exhibition WARHOL - PANAMARENKO (Collection Matthys-Colle & S.M.A.K.) in Ghent's contemporary art museum SMAK.

This 'Marilyn Monroe' by Andy Warhol is part of an 1967 edition.

This means: 5 years after she took her own life.

After that tragedy, Marilyn Monroe became one of the most iconic Hollywood divas ever.

Even for contemporary celebrities like Kim Kardashian.

Het bronzen standbeeld van Koning Willem I aan de Reep staat er nog geen twee jaar. Koning Willem I was de eerste en enige koning van het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden van 1815 tot 1830.

Drijvende kracht was kranige professor in ruste Evrard. Bij de onthulling van zijn levensdroom was hij 94. Met een arm in het gips. Jammer genoeg was huidige koning Willem-Alexander - voor de vrienden W***y - niet aanwezig.

Evrard wou de controversiële Koning Willem I rehabiliteren. Want voor Gent was hij een zegen: hij gaf een boost aan de katoenindustrie, hij liet het kanaal Gent-Terneuzen uitgraven. En vooral: hij richtte de Gentse universiteit op in 1817. Mijn Alma Mater trouwens.

Nederlands wereldberoemde grafisch kunstenaar M. C. Escher tekende ooit de Gentse Sint-Niklaaskerk en het Belfort op de achtergrond.
Zijn standplaats zou het voormalige hoofdpostkantoor - nu luxehotel The Post 1898 - kunnen zijn.
Escher is tegendraads. Hij kiest niet voor het pittoreske plaatje een beetje verderop op de Sint-Michielsbrug met de iconische 3 torens van Gent, maar dit minstens even interessante beeld.
Ook zijn perspectief verrast en zijn gevoel voor detail is weergaloos. Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar de rondstruinende mensen voor de hoofdingang van de Sint-Niklaaskerk.
