In the town of Hooglede, about 25km from Ypres, you will find the Hooglede German war cemetery. There are four German WW1 cemeteries in Flanders Fields, of which this is one. The site was established as a cemetery in 1917. It is estimated by the end of the war over 4,000 soldiers were buried there, today there are over 8,000 graves.
As part of the Landscapes. Feel Flanders Fields theme year, there will be a new augmented reality experience at Hooglede Cemetery called ‘A Last Greeting’. Visitors will be able to scan QR codes around the site, where an app on their smartphone will show the holographic character of Nurse Ida.
Ida will tell her fictional story of historical events of the impacts and experiences of war. Nurses were often the last to be with wounded soldiers before they died. She will guide visitors around the site as part of the experience and invite them to pay their respects to those who died during WW1.
The app ‘A Last Greeting’ can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store. For more information visit the link in the comments.
