A place for gods and humans to commune through the awe of nature, Bulgaria’s Perperikon was a sacred place even before written history, founded by Thracians in the fifth millennium BC. It is one of the biggest fortresses in Europe, and archaeological studies are continuing, but it was almost certainly a site of worship of Dionysus to rival Delphi, and later hosted Romans, Goths and Bulgarians. I found the ancient plumbing and sacrificial rites fascinating and the views of the surrounding forests on the gentle peaks of the Rhodope mountains, stunning.

St. Nicholas Day on the December 6th, is a great winter festival. Bulgarians celebrate St. Nicholas as the protector of travelers, sailors and fishermen.

Carp is the special food for the day, as legend tells how, when a ship was sinking because of a hole in the hull, St. Nicholas stuffed a live carp in the hole, saving the ship.

Jet2holidays reports a 25% increase in early bookings for Bulgaria for the next summer season.

The Kovachevitsa village was founded by refugees from different villages, who tried to escape the Ottoman rule in the 17th century. The isolated location and the fresh water supply were the most important factors in this process. The village has never had Ottoman administration, so it preserved the Bulgarian traditions.

The first school was founded in 1820 and run by priests. In 1854, a secular school was founded.

St. Nicholas' church was built in 1847 and a bell-tower was built in 1900. The church has been designated as a national cultural monument and the school is a museum.

History
Bulgaria's history spans millennia with towns and cities open-air museums of the past. The Battle of Achelous took place on 20 August 917, on the Achelous river near the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, close to the fortress Tuthom (Pomorie) between Bulgarian and Byzantine forces. The Bulgarians obtained a decisive victory which not only secured the previous successes of Simeon I, but made him ruler of the whole Balkan Peninsula, excluding the well-protected Byzantine capital Constantinople and the Peloponnese. The battle, which was one of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the European Middle Ages, was one of the worst disasters ever to befall a Byzantine army, and conversely one of the greatest military successes of Bulgaria. Among the most significant consequences was the official recognition of the imperial title of the Bulgarian monarch.
