Kukeri (Bulgarian: кукери; singular: k***r, кукер) are elaborately costumed Bulgarian men, and sometimes women, who perform traditional rituals intended to scare away evil spirits. Closely related traditions are found throughout the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The costumes cover most of the body and include decorated wooden masks of animals (sometimes double-faced) and large bells attached to the belt. Around New Year and before Lent, the k***ri walk and dance through villages to scare away evil spirits with their costumes and the sound of their bells. They are also believed to provide a good harvest, health, and happiness to the village during the year.

The k***ri traditionally visit peoples’ houses at night so that “the sun would not catch them on the road. After parading around the village they usually gather at the village square to dance wildly and amuse the people. Kukeri rituals vary by region but remain largely the same in essence.

Discover Plovdiv! 🚗🤩

🇬🇧 ----------

Today we proudly present one of the newest jewels in the rich treasury of Plovdiv! This April we officially opened the preserved northern part of the Forum of Philippopolis: the commercial, administrative and religious center of the ancient city. Meetings, debates, celebrations and state affairs took place here.
On the northern side of the forum complex are located the public buildings for the needs of, for example, the city authorities. The Treasure Building is documented epigraphically, the Odeon (Boulevardion) was discovered in the northeast corner, and the city library stands to the west of it.
This completes the conservation and restoration of the Northern Forum, and we continue to unravel the entire Forum and its ancient mysteries.
