🍷Villa Velis is located in Karabunar village, Pazardzhik Province, just a one-hour drive from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. It is open throughout the year and offers wine tastings, winery tours, art events and exclusive experiences. Villa Velis is part of the Bulgarian-German winemaking project Velis Vineyards, which began in 2010 with the preservation and recultivation of old vines in the heart of the Upper Thracian Valley. 🌹Bulgaria is one of the biggest rose-oil producers in the world and a country that has been closely related to the beautiful flower for centuries. South of the Stara Planina Mountain is the Valley of Roses. Unique to Bulgaria, it covers a huge area. The Rosa Damascena has been cultivated here for centuries and become one of the Bulgarias symbols. The famous rose oil is extracted industrially by distillation and widely used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industry.
🌹The picking season lasts from May to June. During this period, the area gives off a pleasant scent and is covered with multi-coloured flowers. The gathering process requires great dexterity and patience. The flowers are carefully cut one by one and laid in willow-baskets which are then sent to the distilleries. Tourists are welcome to join the rose-picking process, usually on weekend mornings when special ritual reenactments are organized in villages around Kazanlak.
The centre of the rose oil industry is Kazanlak, while other towns of importance include Karlovo, Sopot, Kalofer and Pavel banya. Each year, festivals are held celebrating roses and rose oil.

📚Today Bulgaria 🇧🇬 and North Macedonia 🇲🇰 celebrate the saints Cyril and Methodius. The two brothers devised the Glagolitic alphabet to translate the Bible and other Christian writings into what is now called Old Church Slavonic. The Glagolitic later developed into the Cyrillic alphabet which is now used in a number of Slavic languages including Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian etc.

✏️The Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets are the oldest known Slavic alphabets, and were created by the two brothers

✏️The early Glagolitic alphabet was used in Great Moravia between 863 (the arrival of Cyril and Methodius) and 885 (the expulsion of their students) for government and religious documents and books, and at the Great Moravian Academy founded by Cyril, where followers of Cyril and Methodius were educated.

✏️The early Cyrillic alphabet was developed in the First Bulgarian Empire and later finalized and spread by disciples Kliment and Naum in the Ohrid and Preslav schools, as a simplification of the Glagolitic alphabet which more closely resembled the Greek alphabet.

🙏For their work evangelizing the Slavs, they are known as the "Apostles to the Slavs" and "equals to the Apostles".

✅️Bulgarian language was legitimated as a sacred language, together with the other three languages - in which the Scriptures were to be written - Greek, Latin and Jewish.

✅️The Cyrillic alphabet is used today in 12 countries in Eastern Europe and Northern and Central Asia, which are Slavic countries, as well as in non-Slavic countries, such as Mongolia

🇧🇬In Bulgaria today's feast is known as the "Bulgarian Education and Culture, and Slavonic Script Day" (Bulgarian: Ден на българската просвета и култура и на славянската писменост), a national holiday celebrating Bulgarian culture and literature as well as the alphabet.

🔥Sirni zagovezni is a holiday with a variable date, which is celebrated every year 7 weeks before Easter - always on a Sunday.The observance of this day is dedicated to the preparation for the Easter fast, which lasts 49 days. That is why it brings the idea of ​​a final tax . Dairy foods can be consumed for the last time on this day. Weddings after Sirni zagovezni are also prohibited - until Easter.
🙏By tradition on this day, relatives and acquaintances forgive each other for any mistakes or sins in the past year and the younger kiss the hand of the elder.
👄The tradion custom "hamkane" is performed- grandmothers tie a red thread to the ceiling beam, on which a piece of halva, cheese or a boiled egg is attached. The children line up in a circle on the floor, with their hands behind their backs, and when the grandmother shakes the thread, they race to bite the piece with their mouths.
🔥An essential moment in the Sirni ritual is the lighting and jumping over of large fires by bachelors and grown-up boys.
👹"Kukeri" are masked characters as only men (bachelors) can be k***rs, only the leader of the k***r squad is a married man. The clothes and masks of the k***rs are different in the different regions but the message of all is to drive away winter and evil, to make way for the coming spring.

On February 14th Bulgarians celebrate Trifon Zarezan (the Pruner) - the patron saint of the vineyards. It is the feast of the vine-growers and wine-makers. This is a labor feast associated with the first year of the vines processing - the spring trimming.The holiday marks the dividing line between the outgoing winter and the onset of spring. There are many rituals performed to ensure vitality and fruitfulness.Ritual practices show considerable unity. Each man baptized himself, watered wine around the pot, drank with the coder and watered again by blessing. After every farmer has abandoned his vineyard, they all gather at a common table. A large bunch of basil, in which three vine sticks are placed, is placed in the middle. The oldest and most respected vineyard picks up the wrist and says, "Whoever is happy, let him take his wrist and become a king!" Everyone has the right to take the wrist, but usually the young ones retreat to an adult and experienced vineyard and especially to the one who is already " reigned ", and during his" reign "there was no hail or drought, but fertility. As soon as he takes his wrist, the rest of him are happy with the "kingdom," and the feast begins. "The King" is decorated with a wreath of grape rods that he wears on his head, and with another crown that he puts over his shoulders.The tour of the village from the vineyards ends in the king's house, where there is again a feast and a great “horo” (bulgarian folk dance). Women also take part in the rural celebration, but on the culinary side. Horo has a key character at the holiday. It is played by the men on the vineyard and on the way to the village.
