Have you heard the curious story of the Communist party house (National Assembly Building), which culminates in 1990 when shortly after the end of the Socialist Regime the red star which stood on top of the building was removed with a helicopter (in its place now you can see the Bulgarian flag).

This act is interpreted as the beginning of a historical change in Bulgaria. But this act had its own story.

Before the decision to remove the star was taken a young student sent a letter to the most read newspaper where he stated that the red star has never been a symbol of our country and if it is not removed, he will set himself on fire. It is unknown whether this letter influenced the decision for the removal or not, but this letter became a part of the history;

Do you know that if you stop at the exit of the Serdica metro station, right next to the elevator, at the side of Balkan hotel, you will be at a very special place in our city.

The point of tolerance, a.k.a The Little Jerusalem!

This is the place in Sofia where you can simultaneously see: an Orthodox Church (St. Nedelya - behind you), The Banya Bashi Mosque (in front of you), The St. Joseph Catholic Church (on the far left side behind St. Sofia Statue) and the Synagogue (whose black domes are seen behind the Central Market building).

These temples peacefully neighbour each other in less than a square km!

The time of salads! Abundance of fresh vegetables - tomatos, cucumbers, peppers, you name it!

Did you know that the most famous Bulgarian salad - The Shopska salad was invented during the socialism in Bulgaria as part of tourist promotion?
Nonetheless it did become a signature dish for our country and to be honest we do love it!

Made with cheese (white), cucumbers (green) and tomatos (red) it perfectly represents the colours of the Bulgarian flag 🇧🇬 🙂

Do you know which is the first residential building in Sofia?

It is the beautiful building called "St.Sofia" situated on the famous Moskovska street, just next to Basilica St.Sophia!

Called at the time "the first Bulgarian skyscraper" the building miraculously survived the WW2 bombings of Sofia despite its impressive size.

Do you know which is the oldest park in Sofia?

It's the City garden, officially opened in 1878, the year of Bulgaria’s liberation from the Ottoman Empire.
Located just in front of the National Theater “Ivan Vazov” the city garden perfectly embodies the spirit of central Sofia – charming and romantic, without being cheesy.

24th May is the official celebration of the Bulgarian (Cyrillic) Alphabet!

In AD 886, the Bulgarian Empire introduced the Glagolitic alphabet, devised by Saints Cyril and Methodius in the 850s. The Glagolitic alphabet was gradually superseded in later centuries by the Cyrillic script, developed around the Preslav Literary School, Bulgaria at the beginning of the 10th century.

Bulgaria celebrates all things Slavonic on 24 May, officially called the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Alphabet.

“Serdica is my Rome”
This was reported to have been said by the Roman Emperor Constantine I the Great.
Serdica was the ancient city that Sofia is literally built on top of.
It was part of the Roman empire during the reign of Constantine I the Great (306-377 AD), who was allegedly very impressed with the mild climate and beautiful natural scenery of that particular part of his vast empire.

Get Self-Guided in Bulgaria

Every time we visit a new city we are looking for the perfect balance between the charm of wandering around town freely and the pragmatic benefits of knowing where you’re heading to next. Sometimes you just can’t join the guided tours (timing, organisation, etc.) or you just prefer to explore on your own. Inspired by the quest to find the perfect balance between being guided and being independent, we created “Get Self-Guided”.

“Get Self-Guided” is an online platform for self-guided tours in Bulgaria, designed for those of you who are curious and brave enough to explore on their own, offering an easy and fun way to get your way around while remaining independent and flexible.

We, the team behind “Get Self-Guided” are city and mountain guides, event and marketing professionals, but above all we are a bunch of enthusiastic travelers. From Chile to Morocco and from Florida to Thailand, we have always been passionate about exploring the world and embarking on all kinds of adventures.

And we are more than eager to share with you everything we know about travel, history, culture, events, and hospitality in Sofia and Bulgaria!
