Neophron Tours is one of the major tour operators in Bulgaria for foreign travelers who come for specialized wildlife holidays. Run by experts with long experience in this type of tours, the company has built up a reputation for the quality of services offered. Everywhere we go, we always try to support the local service providers and promote environment friendly tourism, believing that this will

greatly contribute to improving the life of local people and will raise their awareness to wildlife and nature conservation. One of our ultimate goals has always been to raise funds to help wildlife conservation in the different areas we visit during our tours in Bulgaria. Thanks to funds generated through our tours and the support of our tour participants, we recently launched a special Wildlife Conservation Fund to help conserve the national populations of a number of rare and endangered species of birds, such as the breeding Egyptian Vulture and Griffon Vulture in the Eastern Rhodopes, the Eastern Imperial Eagle in the Sakar Hills, the Semi-collared Flycatcher in the oak forests of the Eastern Balkan Range, the wintering Red-breasted Goose in the Coastal Dobroudzha and many others. We also help local Bulgarian NGOs, and the Wildllife Conservation Society in particular, in their crucial work for preservation of different biodiversity rich areas in Bulgaria and saving those areas from deterioration. Under WCS proposals several new protected areas have been declared and
many others have been saved from destruction. By simply joining one of our tours, you will certainly contribute to our conservation efforts, as much of our Wildlife Conservation Fund is generated through them. This is the reason for us to say that Neophron Tours is the logical choice for anyone who favors responsible travel and loves nature and wildlife. Neophron Tours holds tour-operating certificate PK-01-7186, issued by the Bulgarian Government.

Earlier this month we had a very enjoyable and rewarding FAM birding and photography trip for our new interns, Arnau Soler and Aina Rossinyol, two biologists and wildlife photographers from Catalonia. We took them to see and test our bird photography hides and facilities and made a tour of Bulgaria’s richest biodiversity areas – the Northern Black Sea coast, the Bourgas wetlands, the Eastern and Western Rhodopes and Rila Mountain.

Arnau and Aina are in the process of setting up their own travel company specialising in nature photography and were keen to gain practical experience and learn from us here at Neophron Tours. This exchange is part of the Erasmus European Exchange Programme for Young Entrepreneurs, which helps the new entrepreneur acquire the skills needed to run a small business. On the other hand, the host benefits from a fresh perspective on his business and has the opportunity to work with foreign partners and learn about new markets.

Thank you, Arnau and Aina, for your dedication and talent, and we wish you every success!

Our next Woodpeckers, Owls and Grouse tour is scheduled for 8 -16 November, 2024. We begin this tour by exploring the Rila Mountains. This is landscape of exceptional natural beauty, with high peaks over 2500 m and fascinating alpine meadows dotted with glacial lakes, dense forests, spectacular rock gorges and sheer cliffs. On the first day before dark we will search the conifer forests for Eurasian Pygmy Owl and Tengmalm’s Owl. We will spend the whole next day exploring the conifer forests, looking for Eurasian Pygmy Owl and Hazel Grouse, as well as Black Woodpecker and Grey-headed Woodpecker. Other mountain species that we can expect to see here include the Great Spotted Woodpecker, Spotted Nutcracker, Ring Ouzel (ssp. alpestris), Crested Tit, Willow Tit, Common Firecrest, Common Crossbill and Eurasian Siskin.

In March this year, part of our team went on a private 13-day birding trip to Oman, mainly in search of birds, but we were also able to enjoy the rest of the amazing wildlife of Oman. After exploring numerous mountain gorges, crossing the Arabian Desert twice by car (to Salalah and back to Muscat) and two pelagic trips in the Arabian Sea, the result was 186 bird species, 2 whale species, 2 dolphin species, 3 sea turtle species, a Nubian ibex, 2 Rupell's sand foxes, half a dozen hyraxes and several unidentified bat species.
We also used this fabulous trip as a fam trip, with the idea of returning to Oman with friends or clients. If you are interested, please drop us a line and we will set a date for 2025.

Shikra, Accipiter badius, is widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia and has only a small breeding population at the edge of the Western Palearctic, on the territories of Azerbaijan, Armenia and NW Iran.
Our new tour to Azerbaijan this spring offers excellent opportunities to see a number of bird species, which are either range-restricted in the Western Palearctic or rare and difficult to see elsewhere.

Here are some beautiful photos by Israeli photographer Haim Israeli, taken in February 2023 on our Winter Photography Tour in Bulgaria and Greece.
We need at least one more person to join the tour, which will take place between 11 and 18 February 2024. This is an 8-day photography tour focusing on the wintering pelicans of Lake Kerkini in northern Greece and the resident vultures of Bulgaria's Eastern Rhodope Mountains just over the border. At times when the photo hides are less busy, we visit a nearby reserve where reintroduced populations of European bison and red deer roam in the wild - another setting that makes for great wildlife photography. Here in Bulgaria, in our high mountains we have the perfect conditions to photograph the Spotted Nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes). The birds are very curious and often fight in the snow-covered forest, which makes for a great photographic experience. Any of our winter photography or birding tours starting or/and ending in Sofia can be extended to include a couple of days for Nutcracker photography.

Tailor made short breaks are always possible.

Winter is the perfect time to enjoy and capture the Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans in their breeding colours, and a great opportunity to photograph Griffon Vultures and other raptors in a snow-covered landscape. On our Winter Photography in Bulgaria and Greece tour we visit two wonderful natural areas that are among the richest in birdlife in Europe. One is Lake Kerkini in northern Greece and the other is the Eastern Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria, just over the Bulgarian-Greek border.
The photos below were taken by the Finish wildlife photographer Arsi Ikonen on one of our previous tours.

Winter Photography in Bulgaria and Greece is one of our most popular tours. It is an 8-day photography tour focusing on the wintering pelicans at Lake Kerkini in northern Greece and the resident species of vultures in the Bulgarian Eastern Rhodope Mountains just across the border. During times with less activity at the photo hides we visit a nearby reserve where reintroduced populations of European Bison and Red Deer roam in the wild – another setting that makes for good wildlife photography:

Our Winter Photography Tour allows you to enjoy and photograph outstanding birdlife in a scenery of magnificent mountains only a few hours flight away from anywhere in Europe. The highlights of the tour are the Dalmatian Pelican and the Griffon Vulture. The picturesque Lake Kerkini in northern Greece is where we find the former, while for the latter we cross the Greek-Bulgarian border to the Eastern Rhodope mountains, where we manage a fixed hide. We still have a few spots on the tour scheduled on the 11th to the 18th February 2023 - http://neophrontours.bg/tour/winter-photography-tour/.
