Hello everyone! Mating season is yet again upon us with the yearly hatching/birth of birds. A lot of babies and fledglings are being found, having fallen vulnerable to all sorts of mishaps as they, much like our own children, grow into maturity.

First thing to do, since there will always be some level of shock involved, is secure the little one in a towel lined, size appropriate box with just enough ventilation to prevent escaping and being careful to cover the top, place in a warm, quiet spot, which provides a dark calming environment. Next, call Somerset Wildlife Sanctuary 799-8888 and if I am unable to answer please leave a message describing your situation. I will get back to you shortly or alternatively, send me a message (messenger, whatsapp, text).

Most importantly, although well meaning, do not try to feed or give water. Various compromised health conditions require different treatments. A bird's average body temperature is 105.5° F, so you can imagine what cold, even room temp. fluids will do. If a bird is emaciated, too much food at first will overwhelm, resulting in a negative outcome. There is a solid protocol to follow for the initial triage treatment, which includes electrolytes and measured amounts of food according to body weight.

The greatest number of injuries I receive in is from kitties prowling, especially at night. During this period of spring/summer, if you can keep them indoors overnight and contained during the day all the better. Kitty will be safer and birdies too. Thanks so much!!

Good day everyone❣️
Window Strikes by birds are becoming more frequent now that there is a plethora of birds on the island migrating in and also as a result of fallout from recent storms. If you come upon a bird not moving on the ground appearing stunned, but alive, or witness such an event, first find a box, put a towel on the bottom or a few layers of paper towel, cover the top and place in a dark, warm and quiet area while calling a rehabilitator. MOST IMPORTANT, do not give water or food although tempting. Birdies have an average body temperature around 105.5°, so any fluids like electrolytes need to be warmed accordingly close to body temperature. Cold or even room temp water will kill when they are in shock.
Likely exhausted and emaciated from a harrowing journey, food will not digest well if dehydration is not addressed first and needs to be done by a professional rehabber or veterinarian. Since head trauma is usually the most likely injury, anti-inflamatory pain meds will need to be administered. Birds may appear to rebound very quickly sometimes (adrenaline) and fly off. The reality is they often die hours later without treatment. If you are able to pick up bird, safe to assume he/she is in critical shape. Note: In other circumstances, even if they appear lively at first they are only trying to act normal to a predator, self preservation at work! The meaning behind bird behavior can be tricky and counter intuitive.
