Staying home has its advantages! A handsome Striped Owl (Asio clamator) was a nighttime visitor yesterday here in Alta Floresta in the Brazilian Amazon. If you can, stay home and stay safe!

This past November I was invited to scout the southern reaches of the Juruena National Park by ICMBio and the Flutuante Salto Augusto. This Cryptic Forest-Falcon was one of the many highlights of the visit. The elegant lodge and remote wilderness of Juruena NP are sure to put on the map in the very near future.

Yellow-billed Cardinal feeding at a flowering Combretum (escova-de-macaco) in the northern Pantanal -- a common scene during the dry season. The native species of Combretum climbing bushes found in Brazil are magnets for a wide variety of birds when they are in flower.

While its rarer cousin the Hyacinth Macaw (admittedly a very handsome bird) gets more attention, for my money the Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) is the best looking macaw in Brazil... if I could choose a bird that best represents the state of Mato Grosso, this would be it. Loud, charismatic, and abundant in the open spaces of the cerrado and the dense forests of the Amazon, these macaws really grab your attention!

The unique Saw-billed Hermit is endemic to the lowland Atlantic rainforest found along the coastal plain and at the base of the Serra do Mar in eastern Brazil. Check out this slow-mo video to see how this tiny wonder of nature sips at the nectar from a homemade hummingbird feeder.

This is Cryptic Forest-Falcon (Micrastur mintoni), a discreet inhabitant of the dark forest.

This photo was taken in July 2016, when we were pleased to help our friend add hundreds of species from the Amazon during his Big Year and we are very honored to have contributed while he was trying to break the world record.

The world record of 6.852 species was set in 2016 by Arjan Dwarshuis, from the Netherlands.

Imagine paddling quietly up to a bird like this... it looks in your direction, makes a split-second decision to ignore you, and returns its attention to the small fish it has been stalking for several minutes now... During the end of the dry season at Anavilhanas National Park in the Brazilian Amazon (from late September into November), this sort of encounter with the fabulous Agami Heron (Agamia agami) happens regularly!

For three consecutive years we have visited the north-eastern state of Maranhao in October and November to witness the spectacular crake spectacle in Arari... ten species of rallids seen in a single day! Also Hooded Gnateater, Kaempfer's Woodpecker, Black-chested Tyrant, Buff-browed Chachalaca, Bearded Bellbird and much more!

The trip report from our 2018 tour is now online at: https://www.birdingmatogrosso.com/trip-reports

All of our Maranhao trips are accompanied by local guide extraordinaire Thiago Rodrigues. Without Thiago's legwork and fieldcraft, these trips wouldn't be nearly as successful!

Amazonian Parrotlet (Nannopsittaca dachilleae), an elusive little parrot found only in the southwestern Amazon, and almost unknown in Brazil. Many thanks to Ricardo Plácido, top guide in the state of Acre, for alerting us to the presence of these birds!

Semicollared Puffbird (Malacoptila semicincta)
A specialty of the south-western Amazon, and not an easy bird to find anywhere, but particularly difficult to see in Brazil. We had a great encounter with a very well-behaved individual at the Ramal do Noca west of Rio Branco in Acre state during a just-finished tour across the Brazilian Amazon. This indiscreet denizen of low levels in the forest interior is a great prize for any tour, and was definitely the highlight of our final morning.

"10 Year Challenge", showing the fantastic transformation at SAVE Brasil's Pedra da Anta reserve in the hills of the Serra do Urubu in Pernambuco. At Birding Mato Grosso we support SAVE Brasil's conservation efforts -- including projects such as this one -- with a direct cash donation per every client we receive on our tours. We are very proud of this partnership, and hope to be able to support SAVE Brasil's projects, with your help, for many years to come!

Our South-east Brazil tours all include a visit to the coast of southern São Paulo or northern Paraná states to look for the endemic and endangered Red-tailed Parrot (Amazona brasiliensis). Last month we visited a roost area where we were treated to perhaps the closest views I've ever had of the species! Habitat destruction for development and ongoing nest poaching pressure for the illegal pet trade continue to threaten this species, which has an extremely limited range and depends on both restinga and mangrove forests.

One of the absolute highlights of a recent custom tour across south-east and north-east Brazil was this exquisite Rufous-faced Crake, one of the rarest and least known rails in the Americas. Our friend Cal Martins located this bird in his home town of Dourado in the interior of São Paulo state, and since our first visit to the site with a group in 2015 Cal has 'trained' this individual to perform spectacularly. Possibly the bird of a trip, which is no mean feat when the competitors for the title included Blue-eyed Ground-Dove, Pinto's Chachalaca, Red-tailed Parrot, Black-hooded Antwren, and Orange-bellied Antwren.

Please watch this beautiful but chilling video on the Campos Amazonicos National Park, located the southern Amazon in the states of Amazonas and Rondônia. We visit the park on our Rio Roosevelt and Remote Southern Amazon tours, and it is truly a special place for birds and biodiversity. Unfortunately, as we saw last October when we discovered an clandestine illegal logging operation destroying our best site for Rondônia Bushbird during a custom tour, the area is under attack from loggers, ranchers, and hydroelectric projects. Unless things change soon, we will all be hearing more and more about the accelerating destruction of the Brazilian Amazon...
