It is undeniable the role that enslaved Africans played in shaping the culture, cuisine and people of Minas Gerais. Cities like Diamantina, Ouro Preto and Tiradentes are full of stories of resilience, art, and community.

Learn about Chiva da Silva in Diamantina, a prominent figure in 18th-century Brazil. Born around 1732, she was an enslaved woman of African descent who gained her freedom and became notable for her social ascent in Brazilian society, which was highly unusual for a black woman during that time.

In Ouro Preto, visit the mine linked to the history of Chico Rei, an African king who became enslaved and brought to Brazil to work in the gold mines. He bought his and other slaves' freedom, becoming a symbol of resistance and freedom. He is celebrated in Ouro Preto for his leadership and contribution to Afro-Brazilian culture and heritage.

And walk through the alleys that enslaved Africans were forced to use to avoid being seen on the main streets of Tiradentes and discover the city from another point of view.

Explore museums, churches, and mines that bear witness to the Afro-Brazilian legacy, and let the vibrant traditions, music, and cuisine speak to your soul. This is more than a trip; it's an opportunity to connect with the heart of Brazil's heritage and honor the contributions of its African descendants.

Traveling the Royal Road is a great program to do with children. Your client can choose the route and stops so that they travel between 3 and 4 hours between destinations, or even less, and there are many attractions that appeal to adults, teenagers, and children. In addition to the historical component, this trip also offers a lot of fun. See below for some tips:

- Walk through the halls and see cave paintings in the Gruta do Maquiné, in Codisburgo.

- Take the Maria Fumaça train from Tiradentes to São João Del Rey.

- Kayak on the Cipó River in the Serra do Cipó.

- See life-sized statues sculpted by Master Valentim in the chapels depicting scenes from the Passion, in Congonhas.

- Descend in a rail cart, Indiana Jones-style, into the Passagem Gold Mine and see the underground chambers and lakes.

- Slide in slippers through the corridors of the Imperial Museum and see the Crown Jewels, in Petropolis.

- Follow a guide-miner to a waterfall and try to find diamonds with a gold pan, in Diamantina.

- See the maned wolves at the Caraça Sanctuary.

- Take a boat to crystal-clear water islands and swim among the fish in Paraty.

This is a trip to make lasting family memories.

The Diamond Path is the most beautiful stretch of the entire Royal Road because it follows the Espinhaço mountain range, passing through colonial towns, farms, waterfalls, until it reaches Diamantina, which, of all the historical cities in Minas Gerais, offers the best blend of architectural, cultural, and natural attractions.

This path can be an extension of the New Path, connection Ouro Preto to Diamantina, the two cities that are World Hertiage Sites, with a stop at the Serra do Cipó National Park, which boasts impressive waterfalls.

Our itinerary to explore the Diamond Path includes:

3 nights in Diamantina
Tours: historical Walking Tour; Cerrado Trails; Biribiri Village. An exploration of the rich architectural heritage of the town and the savanna around it.

2 nights in Serra do Cipó
Tours: Walking trail inside the National Park; Caves Tour. Walk through fields of flowers and savanna flora and go deep into a cave complex.

Economy car rental with pickup and drop-off at.

Transfers with private driver between destinations starting from and ending at Confins Airport.

The great advantage of Tiradentes over the other cities on the Royal Road is its size; everything is concentrated in the historic center, which you can explore on foot. It's a place for you to take your time, alternating between the various fantastic restaurants in the city. The Santo Antônio Church impresses with its Baroque interior and concerts held on its centuries-old organ. Along the cobblestone streets, you'll find shops selling crafts, home decor, cachaça, cheeses, and sweets made in Minas Gerais.

On weekends, the Maria Fumaça train connects Tiradentes to São João Del Rey, which also has a center with colonial houses and churches. Bichinho and Prado, two neighboring villages, are trips for those looking for inspiration to decorate their homes. For those who enjoy more contact with nature, the Serra de São José, which surrounds the city, offers many trails and viewpoints to admire the valley.

When we talk about the Royal Road, the cities of Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Diamantina, and Paraty always come to mind, but the road has treasures that also deserve attention. See our list below:

The Congado of Ouro Preto – held on January 12, this celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary in honor of king Chico is a procession created by enslaved people that continues to this day, with lots of music and beautiful colorful embroidered clothing.

Serro Cheeses – for the people of Minas Gerais, this is not news, but for visitors from other states, tasting the cheeses from the city of Serro is a discovery of flavors.

The Church of N. Sra. Da Conceição in Sabará – it is little visited by those traveling the Royal Road, but it has one of the most impressive interiors among the churches in Minas Gerais and Brazil.

Tabuleiro Waterfall – For the nature lovers, it's the largest waterfall in Minas Gerais.

The village of Itatiaia – located in the municipality of Ouro Branco, the village is an open-air museum with houses painted with graffiti by contemporary Minas Gerais artists.

Santo Antônio Church in Santa Barbara – the painted ceiling, the gilded Baroque altars are beautiful.

Santo Amaro Church in Brumal – the small district of Santa Barbara holds a Baroque gem.

The Paulistas who discovered gold in Minas Gerais used an old Tamoios native path to descend from the plateau to the sea, reaching Paraty. This is the Caminho Velho (Old Path) of the Royal Road, which passes through part of São Paulo before entering Minas Gerais. However, by order of the Portuguese Crown, another route was opened to connect Ouro Preto directly to Rio, called the Caminho Novo (New Path). Today, those who travel the Royal Road can choose between these two routes or create a completely new one by mixing the two.

We always recommend starting with Belo Horizonte or Diamantina and leaving Rio and Paraty (read "beaches") for the end of the trip, taking a few days to relax by the sea. But which of these routes is more interesting?

In terms of scenery, descending to Paraty from Cunha, in São Paulo, is the most beautiful route. The park road that cuts through the Bocaina Hills National Park offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Forest-covered hills. On a clear day, you can see the ocean, and the descent ends right in Paraty.

On the other hand, the descent through Petropolis is not as picturesque and ends on the Washington Luiz Highway, a rather dull freeway. However, this route allows you to visit one of Brazil's most sensational museums, the Imperial Museum of Petropolis.

Now, you can always reach one and go on to the other! Those who descend to Paraty can then come to Rio via the Rio-Santos Highway, another worthwhile road to travel.

The Caminho Novo (New Path) of the Royal Road was the last to be defined, but it became the main route, connecting Ouro Preto to the then capital of the colony, Rio de Janeiro. Because it lies between today's two major state capitals, Belo Horizonte and Rio, it is the most visited. This route boasts 4 World Heritage Sites, charming colonial gems like Tiradentes and São João Del Rey, restaurants, and markets filled with Minas Gerais delights. It also offers two must-see attractions, Inhotim and Petropolis.

Our suggested itinerary to explore the Caminho Novo includes:

1 night in Belo Horizonte.
Tour: Market and food Tour in this vibrant metropolis to start off the journey with a taste of Minas Gerais’s cuisine.

1 night in Brumadinho
Tour: Full Day Inhotim Art Center, the world’s largest open air museum, with many galleries of contemporary Brazilian and international artists.

2 nights in Ouro Preto
Tours: Historical walking tour; Mariana and Gold Mine Full Day Tour; Bom Jesus de Matosinhos World Heritage Site, on the way to Tiradentes. These tours include some of the most impressive works of Brazilian baroque art and architecture.

2 nights in Tiradentes
Tours: Historical walking tour; Full Day São João Del Rey with steam engine train; Petrópolis Imperial Museum, on the way to Rio. Tiradentes is known for being the most charming town in Brazil. Petrópolis’ Imperial Museum was the former palace of the Brazilian Imperial Family and today holds their crown jewels and other memorabilia.

3 nights Rio de Janeiro
Tours: Full day Corcovado & Sugar Loaf; Old Rio walking tour; Free day at the beach. The main attractions of Rio, and a tour of the oldest part of the city will tie up the route.

Transfers with private driver between destinations starting from Confins Airport and ending at one of Rio's airports.

Diamantina doesn't receive as many visitors as its more famous sisters, Ouro Preto and Tiradentes, but those who visit discover that it's a blend of these last two cities. It has impressive houses and churches that reflect the wealth from the diamonds extracted here, yet it has maintained its atmosphere as a quiet little town.

In addition to its architectural ensemble, which was included on the World Heritage Site list in 1999, the city is located high in the Espinhaço mountain range, a region filled with natural beauty such as the Sentinela and Cristais waterfalls within the Biribiri State Park, and the Salitre Cave. One of the original sections of the Royal Road, the Caminho dos Escravos (Slaves' Path) showcases one stretch that was paved with stones by enslaved people.

One of the most anticipated events in Diamantina is the vesperata, a musical performance in the central square of the city where musicians play in the windows of houses while the audience watches from the street.

Of course, Minas Gerais cuisine is an attraction in itself. Guests can tour the towns of Milho Verde and Serro and witness the production of the famous local cheese.

It's not just the colonial cities that make the Royal Road famous; it boasts a beautiful natural heritage that includes valleys, canyons, waterfalls, rivers, mountain ranges, caves, forests, and savannas. Here are some natural highlights of the Royal Road:

Paraty, RJ - islands, deserted beaches, waterfalls, and the beautiful park road that climbs through the Bocaina Hills National Park.

Cunha, SP – In addition to the beauty of the Bocaina Hills, Cunha has lavender fields that bloom year-round.

Ibitipoca, MG – Ibitipoca State Park is one of the most visited in Minas Gerais due to the Window to the Sky, formed by a small river flanked by trees at its fall, with stunning views of the valley.

Serra do Cipó, MG – In addition to the waterfalls of the Serra do Cipó National Park, these highlands are a flower garden. The Espinhaço mountain range is considered a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Conceição do Mato Dentro, MG – Tabuleiro and Véu da Noiva waterfalls are the most beautiful in Minas Gerais.

Diamantina, MG – The surroundings of Tiradentes and Ouro Preto have beautiful mountain ranges, but in Diamantina, it's even more impressive, like the Salitre Cave, which is sensational.

The city that best embodies the Royal Road is Ouro Preto. During the height of gold extraction, the city became one of the most populous in the Americas. It attracted not just fortune seekers but, once established, saw the formation of a new mining elite that imported goods from other colonies and sent their children to study in Portugal. Due to its isolation, Minas Gerais developed its own culture in literature, music, painting, and sculpture. This richness can be seen in museums, like the Inconfidente, which tells an important part of Brazil's history, and in churches like the Pilar, with its golden altars and frescoes on the ceiling. It's also evident in the curious architecture of the Rosário Church and in the works of Master Aleijadinho on the façade of the São Francisco Church, which made Brazilian Baroque art so precious that the historic center is now protected as a World Heritage Site.

Our suggestion for those visiting Ouro Preto is to hire a guide on the first day to take a complete walking tour of the city. The guide will point out details that often go unnoticed by most visitors. On the following day, the visitors can continue exploring on their own and revisit the places they liked the most.

Other tours from Ouro Preto include a visit to Mariana, where, on weekends, there is a Maria Fumaça steam engine train linking the two cities. Visitor can go by train and return in our vehicle, stopping at the Passagem Mine, a deactivated gold mine accessed by a rail car! Surrounding Ouro Preto there are many beautiful natural sites with waterfalls of the Brazilian Cerrado, our savanna.
