“Festa Junina” or “Festa de São João” stands as one of the most traditional Brazilian celebrations. With an origin that goes back centuries, the modern version has a mix of European, African, and indigenous influences.

Usually celebrated in June (but can extend into July and August), the idea of the party roots to the 16th century, introduced to Brazil alongside Portuguese settlers and the Catholic Church. At that time, it was a homage to popular saints, such as St. Anthony and St. John. The people used to dance, attend special masses, join processions, and hold many popular celebrations.

With time and all the miscegenation, indigenous bonfire rituals merged with African dance forms and musical instruments, and they became part of the “Festa Junina”. The food consumed at this time of the year is also very connected with those people - the majority of them are made with corn or peanuts: popcorn, curau (a sweet corn pudding), quentão (a hot wine-based drink), paçoca, corn cake, and many others…

Nowadays, it developed into a festive expression of Brazilian culture and everything that comes with it. The dances (forró, quadrilha, lambada and baião) and the clothes (plaid shorts, straw hats, and patchwork dresses) are very inspired by old countryside habits.

This festive date is an explosion of colors, flavors, music, and happy people! There are also comical roleplays with very specific characters – priests, brides, grooms, and colonels – all inspired by the antique religious characteristics of this holiday!
