🇧🇷 O Theatro Municipal de SP é tão encantador que muitas vezes não admiramos o que está logo ao seu lado, a Praça Ramos de Azevedo. Originalmente chamada de esplanada, foi projetada para tornar magnífica a lateral do Theatro. A princípio possuía uma chaminé, para controlar o sistema de ar quente e frio do theatro, por passagens no subsolo. A praça foi remodelada em 1922, com um conjunto escultórico produzido por Luigi Brizollara. A fonte possui uma alegoria com 3 cavalos alados, que trariam a “glória” da nação brasileira. Em 1957, o prefeito Adhemar de Barros despejou um pouco de água trazida da Fontana di Trevi, batizando-a como fonte dos desejos. O que você pediria ao passar por ali?
🇬🇧 The Municipal Theater of São Paulo is so charming that we often fail to admire what is right next to it, Ramos de Azevedo Square. Originally called the esplanade, it was designed to make the side of the theater magnificent. Initially, it had a chimney to control the theater’s hot and cold air system through underground passages. The square was remodeled in 1922, with a set of sculptures produced by Luigi Brizollara. The fountain has an allegory with 3 winged horses, which would bring the “glory” of the Brazilian nation. In 1957, Mayor Adhemar de Barros poured some water brought from the Trevi Fountain, naming it the wishing well. What would you wish for if you passed by there?

🇧🇷 A mulher negra em destaque é parte da trajetória de Crica Monteiro. Crica gostava de desenhar desde a infância, principalmente pela influência da mãe, que pintava telas. Na adolescência a conexão com o hip-hop foi a conectou ao grafite e seu primeiro trabalho foi em 2001. Bacharel em Design Digital, Crica mescla o físico e o digital no processo criativo e os resultados são sempre cores fortes, contrastantes e que passam alegria. A mulher negra como símbolo vem pela consciência já cultivada pela mãe, que contava sobre sua origem com muito orgulho. Crica percebeu que a mulher negra não era tão retratada nas artes, portanto escolheu ela como musa. Premiada com o prêmio Sabotage em 2024, como melhor grafiteira, Crica ocupa mais um espaço que até pouco tempo, era restrito a um grupo fechado, o Beco do Batman, trazendo ainda mais diversidade e inspirando cada vez mais pessoas, principalmente mulheres, a ocuparem qualquer lugar que quiserem.
🇬🇧 The black woman in the spotlight is part of Crica Monteiro’s trajectory. Crica liked to draw since childhood, mainly due to the influence of her mother, who painted canvases. In her adolescence, her connection with hip-hop connected her to graffiti and her first work was in 2001. With a degree in Digital Design, she mixes the physical and digital in the creative process and the results are always strong, contrasting colors that convey joy. The black woman as a symbol comes from the awareness already cultivated by her mother, who spoke about her origins with great pride. Crica realized that black women were not portrayed as much in the arts, so she chose her as her muse. Awarded with the Sabotage award in 2024, as best graffiti artist, Crica occupies yet another space that until recently was restricted to a closed group, Batman’s Alley, bringing even more diversity and inspiring more and more people, especially women, to occupy any place they want.

>> SHOPPING CIDADE SÃO PAULO MALL
🇧🇷 Já cantava Caetano Veloso nos anos 70 que SP destruía coisas belas pela força da grana e isso pode ser exemplificado pelo processo de demolição da mansão da família Matarazzo, localizada na Avenida Paulista. Por muito tempo, a casa simbolizava o poder do imigrante que teve sucesso e cuja trajetória impactou fortemente a memória coletiva. Mas poucas pessoas hoje se lembram da mansão, visto que a quase uma década, o local é ocupado por um complexo comercial, abrigando o 3º shopping da avenida. Inaugurado em 2015, foi projetado pelo escritório de arquitetura Aflalo/Gasperini e conta com uma torre comercial que atualmente é a mais alta da avenida, com 125m de altura. Inicialmente, pensaram em construir a torre atrás da mansão, mas a ideia foi abandonada. Hoje a única conexão material com a grande mansão encontra-se no jardim lateral, que manteve uma boa parte das árvores que existiam no jardim original da casa.
🇬🇧 Caetano Veloso sang in the 1970s that São Paulo destroyed beautiful things for the sake of money, and this can be exemplified by the demolition process of the Matarazzo family mansion, located on Avenida Paulista. For a long time, the house symbolized the power of the successful immigrant whose trajectory had a strong impact on the collective memory. But few people remember the mansion today, since for almost a decade, the site has been occupied by a commercial complex, housing the third shopping mall on the avenue. Opened in 2015, it was designed by the architecture firm Aflalo/Gasperini and has a commercial tower that is currently the tallest on the avenue, at 125 meters high. Initially, they thought of building the tower behind the mansion, but the idea was abandoned. Today, the only material connection with the large mansion is in the side garden, which has maintained many of the trees that were in the house’s original garden.

>> ESCOLA CAETANO DE CAMPSO SCHOOL
🇧🇷 Há quem saia do metrô República e logo dê de cara com um prédio imponente e se pergunta para quem foi feito esse Palácio. A resposta é que esse prédio é o templo da educação. Inaugurado em 08/08/1894, abrigou a Escola Caetano de Campos, que era a principal escola da cidade. Isso porquê o governo republicano recém criado queria apagar o passado da educação ligado ao Império, construindo então palácios que simbolizavam um futuro diferente. Apesar desse ideal, por muito tempo a educação ali oferecida ainda era excludente, pois inicialmente aceitava apenas meninos e quando passou a aceitar meninas, havia a separação das atividades por gênero. Ainda assim, tornou-se um símbolo da cidade, principalmente pelos “caetanistas”, personalidades que ali estudaram, como Mário de Andrade, Pagu, Dorina Nowill, entre outros. Foi esse grupo de ex-alunos que conseguiu preservar o prédio histórico, ameaçado pela construção do metrô.
🇬🇧 Some people get off the República subway and immediately come face to face with an imposing building and wonder who this Palace was built for. The answer is that this building is the temple of education. Opened on August 8, 1894, it housed the Caetano de Campos School, which was the city’s main school. This is because the newly created republican government wanted to erase the past of education linked to the Empire, so it built palaces that symbolized a different future. Despite this ideal, for a long time the education offered there was still exclusionary, as it initially accepted only boys and when it began to accept girls, there was a separation of activities by gender. Even so, it became a symbol of the city, especially for the “Caetanistas”, personalities who studied there, such as Mário de Andrade, Pagu, Dorina Nowill, among others.It was this group of former students who managed to preserve the historic building, which was threatened by the construction of the subway.

>> MOSTEIRO DE SÃO BENTO MONASTERY
🇧🇷 Hoje é muito difícil pensar que a cidade ficou restrita por 3 séculos em uma pequena área hoje chamada de triângulo histórico. Nas pontas do triângulo estavam igrejas, como o Mosteiro de São Bento. Ocupando a região onde antes estavam indígenas liderados por Tibiriçá, os beneditinos construíram um grande complexo, com uma riqueza de detalhes nessa que é a 4ª edificação deles no local, misturando os estilos gótico e bizantino. O revestimento externo foi feito com 2 tipos de granito, o rosa e o Itaquera, e suas torres simbolizam o início da verticalização de São Paulo. Além disso, o colégio particular foi um dos primeiros na cidade a contar com um elevador, símbolo dos tempos modernos. Mas é com os anjos sineiros da entrada, logo acima da imagem do santo, que o mosteiro no leva de volta ao passado, quando os sinos das igrejas ditavam as horas, ainda hoje tocando a cada 15 minutos.
🇬🇧 Today, it is very difficult to believe that the city was confined for 3 centuries to a small area now called the historic triangle. At the ends of the triangle were churches, such as the Monastery of São Bento. Occupying the region where indigenous people led by Tibiriçá had previously lived, the Benedictines built a large complex, with a wealth of details in this, their 4th building in the area, mixing Gothic and Byzantine styles. The external cladding was made with 2 types of granite, pink and Itaquera, and its towers symbolize the beginning of the verticalization of São Paulo. In addition, the private school was one of the first in the city to have an elevator, a symbol of modern times. But it is with the bell-ringing angels at the entrance, just above the image of the saint, that the monastery takes us back to the past, when church bells dictated the time, still ringing every 15 minutes.

🇧🇷 Intensidade é a marca registrada do artista Fabio Polesi! Suas obras são únicas justamente pela conjunção de vários elementos marcantes, como as cores fortes e vibrantes. Nascido em Santos, no litoral de São Paulo, Fábio atuava como tatuador e artista plástico, formado pela Escola Panamericana de Arte. Foi inovador ao apresentar a Pet Art, em que eternizava os animais domésticos, principalmente cachorros, como obras de arte. Já expôs em diversas cidades do mundo, como New York, Miami, São Paulo, etc. Sempre levando a sua identidade visual, ressaltada pela presença de personagens icônicos da cultura pop, como é o caso do trabalho localizado na Vila Madalena, ao lado da icônica Escadaria do Patápio, que traz o carismático ratinho Remy, do filme Ratatouille. Bem próximo do mesmo local, Fábio fez referência ao herói mais famoso da região, o Batman, com o fundo preenchido com letras de cores vibrantes e intensas. Um artista de traços únicos!
🇬🇧 Intensity is the trademark of artist Fabio Polesi! His works are unique precisely because of the combination of several striking elements, such as strong and vibrant colors. Born in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, Fábio worked as a tattoo artist and visual artist, graduated from the Escola Panamericana de Arte. He was innovative in presenting Pet Art, in which he immortalized domestic animals, especially dogs, as works of art. He has exhibited in several cities around the world, such as New York, Miami, São Paulo, etc. Always carrying its visual identity, highlighted by the presence of iconic characters from pop culture, as is the case of the work located in Vila Madalena, next to the iconic Patápio staircase, which features the charismatic mouse Remy, from the film Ratatouille. Very close to the same location, Fábio made reference to the region’s most famous hero, Batman, with the background filled with letters in vibrant and intense colors. An artist with unique traits!

🇧🇷 Sem sombra de dúvidas, o prédio da FIESP na Avenida Paulista é um ícone da cidade. Construído em 1979, sua arquitetura tornou-se um símbolo de modernidade e ousadia. O projeto foi feito pelo escritório de arquitetura de Rino Levi e foi resultado de um concurso organizado pela Federação das Indústrias para a sua nova sede. Dentre os requisitos para a escolha do vencedor, estava a necessidade de construir uma edificação que se destacasse em meio aos outros prédios da avenida. Essa necessidade foi atendida com o formato de pirâmide, que tornou-se a marca registrada da FIESP. Mas o formato vai além da questão estética: seus 92m de altura, afunilam-se no alto para que os andares superiores, reservados à presidência e diretoria, estivessem afastados dos prédios ao redor, garantindo privacidade. É a arquitetura sendo utilizada em sua potência máxima.
🇬🇧 Without a doubt, the FIESP building on Paulista Ave is an icon of the city. Built in 1979, its architecture has become a symbol of modernity and boldness. The project was designed by Rino Levi’s architectural office and was the result of a competition organized by the Federation of Industries for its new headquarters. Among the requirements for choosing the winner was the need to build a building that stood out among the other buildings on the avenue. This need was met with the pyramid format, which became FIESP’s trademark. But the format goes beyond aesthetics: its 92m high, it tapers at the top so that the upper floors, reserved for the presidency and directors, are away from the surrounding buildings, guaranteeing privacy. It is the architecture being used at its maximum power.

🇧🇷 Você sabia que São Paulo já teve o maior edifício do mundo nos anos 30? Isso mesmo, o querido Banespão já foi o prédio em concreto armado mais alto do mundo, com seus 161 metros de altura. O prédio representava a elite paulista, que após enriquecer com a cafeicultura, encontrava no sistema financeiro uma nova fonte de renda. Inaugurado em 27 de junho de 1947, o prédio segue um formato próximo a de um obelisco, na medida que vai afunilando conforme atinge um patamar mais alto. Os materias para sua construção foram escolhidos para simbolizar poder, tais como mármore de Carrara, porcelana no revestimento, madeira jacarandá, etc. Tudo para demonstrar a pujança que São Paulo queria como sua imagem. Atualmente o prédio é ocupado pelo , que oferece exposições temporárias, além de espaços de alimentação e café. Um clássico paulistano que precisa entrar na lista de qualquer pessoa conhecendo ou morando em São Paulo!

Our Story

We're the first Free Walking Tour in Brazil and São Paulo!

The SP Free Walking Tour is a small Brazilian company, local business, that was founded in january of 2011, in São Paulo, Brazil, with the purpose to offer walking tours (through the Sustainable Tourism) that gives a historic, touristic, cultural and local overview of the city, in a different, informative, healthy and fun way - for backpackers and opened-mind travelers. The tours were opened to the public in the beginning of 2012, and nowadays more than 95,000 travelers have joined the SP Free Walking Tour!

We do our best to do the best walking tour in town!

Our company is authorized to work with Free Walking Tours in São Paulo, having the necessary documents, following all the regulations and laws of the Brazilian Constitution, as also the copyrights and namerights of the brand 'São Paulo Free Walking Tour' in Brazil. In all of our tours, there is an official licensed tour-guide, to ensure the quality and professionalism of the experience around the city, as also a recommendation of the Tourism Department of the Brazilian Government. And mainly, to respect the local community and to value the local workers, supporting the local economy.

We love doing what we do!

Our staff is made by qualified local professionals, who love the brazilian history and culture, and love meeting new people, being helpful and friendly to show the city to everyone. Everybody speaks Portuguese and English, and each one has the best qualification and skills in order to offer this service to you.

Three different routes:

. OLD DOWNTOWN tour (historic center):

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays

at 11h30am (it lasts 3h30min, with a 20min. break in a local place)

Meeting Point: República Square, next to the Tourist Information Center (subway station: República)

. PAULISTA AVE tour (cultural heart):

On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays,

at 3h30pm (it lasts 2h30min, with a 15min. break in a local place)

Meeting Point: on the corner of Paulista Ave with Augusta St. (Jardins side), in front of Banco do Brasil (subway station: Consolação)

. VILA MADALENA tour (local side, with graffities):

On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays,

at 11h00am (it lasts 3h00min., with a 15min. break in a local place)

Meeting Point: in front of Fradique Coutinho subway station (Yellow line), on the corner of Pinheiros St. with Fradique Coutinho St.

NO BOOKING! Just show up at the meeting point 15 minutes before! Tours in English. Tips-based only!

We also have the GASTRONOMIC TOURS: a walking tour visiting four different restaurants and bars, knowing its history, discovering the best items from the menu, and having a free-tasting included in each visit!

There are two different gastronomic tours around the Historic Center:

Tastings adapted for vegetarians! Tour in English and Portuguese, always small groups. Recommended to book online in advance - and get R$10 off!
