Governor's Harbour is where the first Americans landed in 1648 on their voyage from the Carolinas when they were seeking religious freedom and escape from British rule-they named the island "Eleuthera" which means freedom in ancient Greek, and many of their descendants still fill the telephone book to this day. It's a great place where the days are slow and relaxed and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Over the last few years Eleuthera has been discovered again by a very discerning group of tourists looking for a low impact Caribbean destination. It has most of the amenities of a small town but without the thronging hordes of tourists.
