The Spirit in Service

I've been thinking about what makes certain customer experiences unforgettable. It's rarely about the perfect product or the flawless process. It's about something far more human…..something spiritual.

Recently , I watched a grocery store packer spend 30 minutes helping an elderly customer navigate a local grocery store when he realized that she appeared to be having some challenges with her grocery shopping. The young man, (who couldn’t have been more than 15 years old), very patiently announced the items listed on the isle signs, and offered her different options and price points for the items on her list. For context, the local grocery packers do not receive a salary, and make their monies solely from tips. Which stood to reason that he would be more interested in focusing on the quantity of customers in the store so as to maximize on his opportunity to make as much money as possible.
The young man’s grace when the woman felt the need to assert her conscious dependent independence was beyond remarkable.
He stayed with her until the business of ensuring that the elderly woman’s tasks were done and even unloaded the groceries at the register for another packer to reap the rewards of his generous deed. He give the elderly woman his name, and advised her of when he was normally at work, walked away with no expectation of a tip, or thanks.

That's the spirit in service. It's not about transactions or templates. It's about seeing the person in front of you as someone's parent, grandparent, child, or friend. Someone who might be having their worst day or their best moment.

True service isn't measured in minutes or metrics. It's measured in the stories people tell afterward. In the way you make them feel. In the dignity you preserve.

I learned this lesson early in my career from a bible scripture Mark 10:45 which says, “For even the Son of man came not to be served but to serve." Those words transformed how I approach every interaction.

To everyone who embodies this spirit – the flight attendant who calms anxious travelers, the tech support person who never loses patience, the nurse who holds hands through tough nights – thank you. You remind us that service isn't just what we do. It's who we choose to be.

What's your story of exceptional service? Share a moment when someone went beyond the transaction to touch your life.
