We are finally winding up construction, unboxing and putting furniture together in our beach front piece of paradise, and I look out my new bedroom window last evening to see this spectacular fluffy cloud, with a rainbow running through it, reflected over the incredibly calm ocean, (and our yet to be completed pool 😆) and I’m reminded me of why we are here and why we have taken on this often daunting task of building on a small island in the Bahamas. It’s simply beautiful- but that word is somehow not enough. I don’t think the English language has a word that really describes it.

Light Hearted - Bimini, Bahamas // 2022

The S.S. Sapona, a storied shipwreck, rests in the waters off Bimini in The Bahamas. Originally constructed as a concrete-hulled cargo vessel during World War I, its military service was never realized due to the war's abrupt end. Subsequently, it was sold to a salvage company. In 1924, during the tumult of a hurricane, the ship ran aground and found itself marooned upon the shallow sandbanks of Bimini.

Today, the S.S. Sapona is a renowned dive site in The Bahamas, with roughly half of the shipwreck visibly protruding above the waterline. Underwater photography at this site, however, faces significant challenges, notably the influence of wind-induced waves that can create turbulent underwater conditions. Fortunately, during our endeavor, the conditions favored us to achieve clear underwater visibility. The higher tide brought in pristine ocean water, overcoming the effects of wind.

Submerged at a depth of approximately 12 feet (4 meters), the freediver floated effortlessly, suspended just above the seafloor. She basked in the gentle angle of the illuminating light beam, which penetrated the skeletal framework of the shipwreck, creating a mesmerizing underwater tableau.

Introspection - Freeport, Grand Bahama// 2024

Initially, I was drawn to the captivating opening in the coral reef, envisioning the perfect shot from inside the cave. I was looking at it from the surface, wondering if I could fit inside. I saw an opening from the side of the reef and decided to try. Maneuvering through a small opening, I found the ideal frame, with only missing as the central subject. The water was shallow but there were a lot of waves that day which meant there was a lot of surge, which made it difficult for Alannah to stay center frame and for me to avoid getting washed around in the cave.

I was shooting in High-Speed+ mode since I knew I had a small window for everything to align and that I wasn’t able to give Alannah any direction while on the dive. This impromptu photograph emerged amidst our work on an upcoming series focusing on coral reef degradation and ocean conservation, set for release in the coming months.

You can get this photo as a print along with other favorite works of mine at www.andremusgrove.art . I'll be releasing more new works soon on the underwater animals that inhabit the Bahamian waters. Stay tuned.
