As the lush green alpine forest welcomes the arrival of the National Animal, the Takin (Buborcas taxicolar wheiti) also known as Bhutan takin to their summer habitat after spending almost ten months in their winter habitat. The Takin is a seasonal migratory animal, they migrate to higher regions in early summer to avoid blood-sucking parasites, and they migrate to lower valleys in early autumn to avoid the cold, harsh winter season & to find the greener pasture. At this time of year, we can observe their presence in the summer habitat. The Animal is highly protected in Bhutan and it has been listed in Schedule I of FNCA 2023 and vulnerable in IUCN red list. The Offence related to takin is felony of third degree.

July is the most busiest month for Laya Range with several unplanned & regular activities that keeps staff occupied. The unplanned activities includes Assessment of dead dying trees, Himalayan monal threat assessment & Musk Deer antipoaching patrolling.

1. Assessment of threat to Himalayan monal:- Himalayan Monal is a vulnerable species. It is hunted for food, sport and its beautiful feathers. Himalayan Monal is threatened with hunting and population numbers are decreasing & putting them at risk of extinction. Therefore 10 days patrolling was conducted in JDNP to assess & protect this species in their habitat to ensure their survival.

2. Dead dying trees assessment:- With aim of mantaining healthy forest & making efficient use of forest resources, a through assessment of dead dying trees was done in Laya Range as per order from park management.

3. Musk Deer Antipoaching patrolling:- The team from Thimphu accompanied by 3 forestry officials from JDNP proceeded to Tshaijathang for fliming of Bhutan Takin in it's summer habitat. During the time of their visit to different location for fliming around Tsharijathang, the team spotted many fresh traps set along ridges & informed JDNP management. CFO ordered 3 ROs LaPRO, LiPRO & GPRO to conduct a Joint patrolling and scan all nearby area. Therefore staff from 3 ranges proceeded to scan all nearby area & destroyed 7 active traps from Ridrupzhi juk under Gasa Range & 16 active traps from Merana under Lingzhi Range.

In addition to the unplanned activities, the Laya Range also carries out regular activities that includes providing public services and day-and-night patrolling to curb illegal NWFP collectors.

With an area of 904 sqkm & being the most populated(1094) range among 6 ranges as per socio-economic survey report of JDNP 2021 however the range office has only 5 techinical staff & 1 ex-army personnel, resulting in 5 : 218 public to staff ratio.
