Follow the magic in the air to Bhutan.

Whether you’re seeing the last Buddhist kingdom of the Himalayas by foot, car or vehicle, characteristic flashes of color whirling in the wind are sure to catch your eye.

Remember to pause and fully feel the presence of the prayer flags. Enjoy the sound of the breeze blowing blessings and fanning fortune to all. Pair this with the echoing Bhutanese bird song and you get a true Himalayan symphony.

[DID YOU KNOW] - Prayer Wheel

Prayer wheel consists of an embossed hollow cylinder and a rod that runs through its height. Inside the rod is a tightly rolled-up scroll of mantras. Spinning the prayer wheel is equivalent to reciting mantras. Each spin of the wheel is as effective as reciting the mantras orally, multiplied by the number of times the mantra is printed on the scroll.

The purpose of the prayer wheel is to relieve all living beings of their misery. When the mantra is recited, merit, peace and kindness radiate through the world, bringing enlightenment to all sentient beings.

[DID YOU KNOW] - Bhutanese celebrate Mother's Day on the Descending Day of Lord Buddha.

The Descending Day of Lord Buddha, also known as Lhabab Duchen, falls on the 22nd day of the ninth month of the Bhutanese calendar.

Upon learning that his mother was stuck in Trayastrimsa (the Heaven of Thirty-Three) after her death, Lord Buddha ascended there to offer his teachings to the Gods and free his mother from Samsara. Lord Buddha stayed for about 90 days and descended to the human realm on the 22nd day of the ninth lunar month.

To commemorate the significance of Buddha's appreciation for his mother's benevolence, Bhutanese celebrate Mother's Day on the Descending Day of Lord Buddha.

[DID YOU KNOW] - Bhutan National Flag

The National flag is divided diagonally into two equal halves.

The upper yellow half signifies the secular power and authority of the king while the lower saffron-orange symbolizes the practice of religion and the power of Buddhism, manifested in the tradition of Drukpa Kagyu. The dragon signifies the name and the purity of the country while the jewels in its jeweled claws stand for the wealth and perfection of the country.

[DID YOU KNOW] - Deity resides in lakes

Considered abodes of deities, lakes are both feared and revered in Bhutan. Dirtying or defiling of lakes is believed to result in grave consequences such as bad weather, hailstorms and sickness. Such age-old traditional beliefs have been critical in environmental conservation and stewardship in Bhutan. And that is why we have thousands of lakes that are pure and fresh, completely untouched.
