Archery, Bhutanโ€™s national sport, is a great way to experience local culture, with many opportunities to try it while visiting. Itโ€™s an enjoyable activity to share with others, teach kids about sportsmanship, and take part in traditional Bhutanese hospitality, which often includes songs and dances.

50 years Throwback post

Archery holds a special place in Bhutanese culture as the national sport, embodying tradition, skill, and camaraderie. The picture depicts the timeless allure of archery, with traditional bamboo bows and arrows, showcasing the craftsmanship and heritage associated with the sport.

Throughout history, archery has been more than just a game in Bhutan; it's a cultural event that brings communities together. Today, it continues to thrive as a popular pastime, played in villages, towns, and even urban centers. Amidst the modernization of Bhutan, archery remains a cherished tradition, with competitions held during festivals, gatherings, and special occasions.

The popularity of archery reflects its significance beyond mere recreation; it symbolizes Bhutan's commitment to preserving its cultural roots in the face of change.

Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong, is a historically significant dzong in Bhutan, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Constructed in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it serves as a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture and hosts vibrant annual festivals like the Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu.

The annual festival of Paro celebrated from 20th March to 25th March 2024. The Thongdrel, which is believed to liberate devotees at the sight of it, was originally crafted in 1650.

Legend has it that the Paro Poenlop sent a team to Tibet to procure brocade without mentioning the size and the quantity required.

The team returned with materials to complete a precise 30 by 45 metre Thongdrel. According to records with the Paro Rinpung Dratshang, in 1906 during a fire at the dzong, only the Thongdrel and some relics were salvaged.

Attending the Sacred dance festival Terchham โ€œNaked Danceโ€

Jambay Lhakhang Drup or Jambay Lhakhang festival is an enthralling festival of Bhutan.
This year the festival started on 28th November coinciding with full moon day of Lunar calendar. The festival is held at Jambay Lhakhang which is one of the oldest temples in BhutanThe fire offering and the naked dance topping the list. Both of these programmes are held at night on full moon day. The locals believe that passing through the Fire offering in the form of an arch will burn away all the obstacles.
The naked dance represents the primordial wisdom of awareness and emptiness which was initiated by Terton Dorji Lingpa. Simply watching the naked dance is supposed to empower one with an ability to overcome the obstacle of anxiety and fear. Jambay Lhakhang festival also consists of other dances like Dance of Four Groups of Garudas, Stick Dance, the drum dance of Dorji Lingpa, Dance of Lord of Death, Dance of Dramitse and many other colorful and unique dances.
Iโ€™m blessed to be with Mrs. Shasha and her friend Mr. Andrew who made their journey all the way from USA.

Today, Bhutan has recorded a total of 761 bird species. We are home to 52 globally threatened species including 4 critically endangered species. The 4 critically endangered species are: White-bellied Heron (๐˜ˆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด), Baer's Pochard (๐˜ˆ๐˜บ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ข ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช), White-rumped Vulture (๐˜Ž๐˜บ๐˜ฑ๐˜ด ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด), and Red-headed Vulture (๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜บ๐˜ฑ๐˜ด ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ถ๐˜ด).

This birding route begins at the floodplains of Sarpang Dzongkhag, climbing towards Tsirang Dzongkhag, and descends to Changche by Punatshangchu.

The ๐‘๐ข๐ฆ๐œ๐ก๐ฎ - ๐†๐š๐ฌ๐š birding route lies within an altitude range of 1345 - 2817m, and recorded a total of 204 bird species. This birding route passes through the Jigme Dorji National Park, on the bank of Mochu.
