Bhutan's national butterfly at the Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition

You will see the beautiful sculpture Ludlow's Bhutan swallowtail, the national butterfly of Bhutan, at the Royal Project Garden in Gyalpozhing.
The butterfly, first discovered by Ludlow and George Sheriff in 1933, is extremely rare- there had been no recorded sighting until MOAF’s Forest Officer Karma Wangdi found one in Bumdeling, Tashiyangtse in 2009, and confirmed that it is still extant.

Amazingly, in 2011, a team of researchers sighted the butterfly on August 12, the same date that Ludlow and Sheriff took the first specimen 78 years earlier.
