The Dochula Pass is a mountain pass located in the Eastern Himalayas in Bhutan. It sits at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level.

The pass is famous for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range, including majestic peaks such as Gangkar Puensum, the highest unscaled mountain in the world. On clear days, you can also catch a glimpse of other unscaled eastern Himalayan mountain ranges.

In addition to its natural beauty, Dochula Pass is also known for its unique attraction, the Druk Wangyal Chortens. These 108 chortens or stupas were built by the Queen Mother in 2003 to honor Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives during a military operation against insurgents from India in 2003. Each stupa is adorned with beautiful motifs and colorful flags, making it a picturesque spot for visitors.

A monk in Bhutan is known as a "lam" or "lama," which means "spiritual teacher" or "guru" in the Bhutanese language. Monks are highly respected members of society and are often seen as spiritual guides and moral authorities.

Monks in Bhutan lead disciplined lives dedicated to the study and practice of Buddhism. They reside in monasteries or temples and engage in meditation, study Buddhist scriptures, and perform religious rituals. They typically wear maroon or saffron-colored robes and shave their heads as a symbol of achieving Zero attachment.

In Bhutan, the traditional dress for both men and women is called the "Gho" and "Kira" respectively. The Gho is a knee-length robe that is wrapped around the body and secured with a belt, while the Kira is an ankle-length dress that is also wrapped and fastened with a belt. The designs and patterns of the Gho and Kira often vary depending on the occasion, region, and personal preference.

From the moment the Bhutanese are born they're steeped in the rich tapestry of ancient culture. It's not just about customs and behaviour; it's woven into their very clothing—the kira for women and gho for men—garments they proudly flaunt while going about their everyday life. During special occasions such as weddings and Buddhist festivals, it's a whole other show! Exquisite kiras and ghos woven from expensive silks and brocade are paraded with great pride.

We took a candid snapshot of a little girl, hand in hand with her mother, crossing a swaying suspension bridge, headed to the bustling local market. That's Bhutan for you—effortlessly simple yet oh-so-stylish in its everyday charm.

Paro Dzong stands as an epitome of Bhutanese architectural brilliance. Its colossal buttressed walls dominate the town's skyline, casting an enchanting presence across the valley, particularly when illuminated after sunset. I

Initially serving as the National Assembly's meeting hall, it now serves dual purposes like many other dzongs, accommodating both the monastic order and the district government offices, including the local courts.

The dzong courtyard is open daily, but on weekends the offices are deserted. Foreign visitors should wear long sleeves and long trousers and remove their hats when entering.

One of our recent cycling group members captured the dzong at night in this stunning photo

We take acclimatisation seriously at Touch Bhutan Travel.

Acclimatising to high altitudes is important in Bhutan, especially when trekking or cycling at elevations exceeding 4000 meters. It helps prevent altitude sickness and ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Here is our cycling group on their first full day in Bhutan trekking to Tigers Nest monastery at an elevation of 3120 metres.

The food in Bhutan is like no other in the world. The most famous dish of them all is called ema datshi, which comprises chilies and cheese. Don’t let this scare you though, as the Bhutanese have become very adept at tweaking the level of heat to suit every palate. And there’s a wide variety of other dishes and fresh fruit and fresh vegetables to keep everyone happy, not to me mention cuisines from many different countries.

In the main towns of Thimphu and Paro you’ll find Japanese, Korean, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese , Italian, and there’s even a super cool modern Australian restaurant called Cloud 9 run by an Australian chef and her Bhutanese husband.

Locally grown red rice forms the main body of most Bhutanese meals and are normally accompanied by a few side dishes consisting of meat and organic vegetables. Pork, beef, and chicken are the meats that are eaten most often. Vegetables commonly eaten include spinach, pumpkins, turnips, radishes, tomatoes, river w**d, onions, and green beans.

Buckwheat is eaten mainly in Bumthang and maize in the Eastern districts. P**a is an authentic Bhutanese delicacy from Bumthang Valley. Made of buckwheat, it’s a type of noodle served during special occasions. Even in the Western district of Haa, a buckwheat dumpling known as Hontey is served during special occasions. Though it appears to be just a simple buckwheat dumpling with shredded turnip and turnip leaf, the long list of spices that are required to be mixed in to the filling makes the dumpling-making process very tedious.

Come join us in Bhutan and sample the authentic cuisine.

Travelling along the highway on your way from Paro to the capital city of Thimphu, you’ll pass by the beautiful Tachog temple. Perched above the trout-laden river, it can be easily reached by crossing the iron bridge.

It was built in the 15th century by a wandering realized yogi by the name of Thangtong Gyalpo, the iron bridge builder. Known as the Leonardo da Vinci of the Himalayas, he built over 50 bridges in Tibet and Bhutan, a few of which are still in use today.

Take the time to stop and visit this monastery. Enjoy being transported to another time when life was a lot simpler.

Punakha Dzong also known as The Celestial Palace of Great Bliss … a befitting name for such a magnificent structure of great significance.

The founding father of the nation, Zhabdrung Rinpoche, built this dzong at the confluence in Punakha in 1638. He made it the main seat of the Drukpa Kargyu branch of Tibetan Buddhism.

It was modelled on Ralung monastery in Tibet - his ancestral seat.

An interesting fact is that it was built at the base of the mountain range that extends all the way to Ralung.
