The Black- Necked Crane is a striking bird native to the high- altitude region of Central Asia, including Bhutan, India and China. Recognized by its distinctive crane species. Bhutan holds particular significances for these cranes, as they migrate to Phobjikha, and other few valleys during the winter time.

The annual migration of bird is considered a natural spectacle and has deep cultural and religious implications in Bhutan. The arrival of Black-Necked Crane is celebrated with the Black- Necked Crane Festival, reflecting the country’s commitments to conservation and its unique coexistence with the nature.

They inhabits wetland and marshy land where they forage for roots. It also serves as a symbol of environmental balance, and its presence highlights the importance of preserving fragile ecosystems in the face of various challenges.

Druk Wangyel Festival at Dochu La Pass – 13th December 2023

The Druk Wangyel Festival is an annual Bhutanese event held at the Dochula Pass, 45 minutes’ drive from capital Thimphu. It features vibrant mask dances performed by the Royal Bhutan Army, showcasing Bhutanese culture and honoring the country’s military. Many unique dances and traditional folk dances are performed making it very different from other festivals. Gadpo and Ganmo- the dance of the old men and women, a dance of the heroes and the dances of guardian dieties is one of the most popular and interesting dances ever.
