Every year on December 13th, a special festival named Druk Wangyel Tshechu takes place at the Dochula Mountain pass in honour of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and the Royal Bhutan Army. Dochula is located about an hour's drive from Thimphu, enroute to Punakha. At Dochula, you will find 108 identical chortens (stupas); the complex serves as a landmark for travelers passing through Dochula. What makes the Druk Wangyel Tshechu unique is that the mask dances performed at this festival are not commonly seen in other festivals in the country.

Whether you are visiting Bhutan for business or simply seeking a peaceful vacation, Bhutan has something for everyone. If you want to experience the everyday lives of Bhutanese people, their religion, cultures, ceremonies and authentic food, staying in a local homestay with a Bhutanese family is the finest way to do so. While home stays may not offer facilities like hotels and resorts, you can join the daily rituals of Bhutanese people living in villages and participate in cultivation and harvesting alongside other farmers, pick seasonal fruits and vegetables, and eat authentic Bhutanese dishes unspoiled by restaurant recipes.

The day when all the Bhutanese, across the world, chant in unison, “Pelden Drukpa Gyalo” is drawing closer. As we utter the words, our hearts fill with unconditional gratitude to all the beloved Monarchs for who we are today.

While it is a reason for festivity and celebration, more than that, it is an opportune time when we receive the golden words laden with wisdom and insight. The 115th National Day is approaching. Let us celebrate it meaningfully.
