In November 2022, I traveled to Laya Village, starting with a few hours drive through cliff-edge roads to base camp, where our team shared tea alongside young monks and local workers huddled over the heat from a small heater. From there, we hiked on a clear sunny day, snow thawing and past roaring glacial rivers, to reach this remote community at 3,820 meters in the Himalayas. The project focuses on their stories—how traditions shape their present and the youth’s hopes for the future.
Life in Laya has a quiet strength to it—slow-paced, quiet yet thoughtful, and deeply connected to the land. My hosts were incredibly welcoming, and one of the most moving moments came when the lady of the house sang a traditional song, her voice holding everything still.
This project came together with the help of , led by , who - with (producer) by my side the whole way - ensured everything ran smoothly, with huge support back home from (Dublin) that made capturing these scenes possible.
I’ll be sharing more from this journey over time as I work on the documentary and a photo-book planned for release in 2025. Bhutan’s story is one worth telling, and I’m excited to share it to you.
