Bhutan celebrates its 50th anniversary of opening its doors to the world in 1974, marking a significant milestone in the country's tourism journey. The country has embraced a "high value, low volume" tourism policy since its inception, aiming to generate revenue while sharing its rich cultural heritage with the world.
The first group of tourists to Bhutan were eight Americans, five Spaniards, and one Argentinian, who embarked on a challenging journey by road. However, the launch of Bhutan's national airline, Drukair, in 1983 made travel to and from Bhutan significantly more accessible. Bhutan has steadily welcomed more guests, with a peak in 2019 at around 320,000 guests per year. The country is the only country in the world to implement a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for all guests, currently charged at USD 100 per adult, per night. The funds go towards various initiatives, including preserving the country's environment, maintaining its cultural heritage, providing free healthcare and education for all Bhutanese, and supporting sustainable development projects that benefit local communities.
To commemorate the golden jubilee of tourism, the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with other stakeholders and the private sector, will run a series of engaging activities throughout the campaign period. These include a kickoff event in Kuensel Phodrang, the first-ever tourism awards in August, a TEDx Talk featuring speakers from Bhutan discussing tourism through the years, a jewelry collection and fashion show, global embassy events, Dzongkhag visits, preserving memories, and industry collaboration.
Bhutan, a globally admired destination since 1974, is celebrating its journey from welcoming the first tourists to showcasing its heritage and vision for the future. The country's natural beauty, rich culture, spiritual offerings, and warm hospitality are enchanting. Bhutan is one of the three carbon-negative nations in the world and is known for its happiness as a development philosophy. The celebration is a tribute to all who have contributed to the tourism sector.
