I think a black gho is an LBD equivalent, a fashion staple must have for most men in Bhutan, we all own a pair or two. If you are having one of those days where finding the right colour or pattern is becoming quite a challenge, especially if you need to dash out the door immediately then one can never go wrong with a black gho. It is chic, affordable, versatile, and fits every occasion perfectly.
I have chosen black for both Vlad and Alejandro, students of Harvard Kennedy School, US, for their visit to the parliament. I think they are ready to rub shoulders with the movers and shakers of Bhutanese politics and in style.
Vlad’s “gho” experience was both exciting and enriching. The national dress for him definitely was a gateway to our culture. He believes that the traditions and histories of our country could be traced through the intricate patterns and designs of our textiles, that sit so quietly yet boldly on the fabric. He felt like he took a step back in time and experienced Bhutan’s heritage first-hand. The stories attached to the beauty of Bhutanese textiles left him feeling grateful and equally humbled to have been given this opportunity.
Alejandro echoes the same sentiments and added that he too was very humbled by the Bhutanese people’s willingness to share the beautiful tradition with them, and it certainly contributes to the warm welcome that they received in our country.
When asked how they were feeling specifically in their black gho, they both chimed in unison ‘It’s giving regal’.
Cheers to that 🍸
