Everyone’s favourite Dzong is back on our feed once again because we can’t get enough of its stunning vistas! Punakha Dzong, also known as Punthang Dewa Chenpoi Phodrang (Palace of Great Bliss) is a sight to behold. Standing at the confluence of the two rivers, Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, the fortress functioned as the centre of governance until 1955. Today, it serves as the winter residence of the central monastic body and the administrative centre of Punakha Dzongkhag. Important national events such as the Royal Wedding and Coronation of The King were also held at the Punakha Dzong.

Druk Wangyel Festival takes place every year on 13th December at Dochula mountain pass, a short drive away from the capital Thimphu. Against the breath-taking backdrop of the Himalayan mountain range, many sacred dances are performed at the festival retelling the bravery and sacrifices of the Royal Bhutan Army. An equally unique dance is the ‘Dance of Guardian Deities’ which is performed in reverence of the main protector deities of dharma (choesung).

Chunipa Losar is celebrated in many parts of Bhutan - especially the east - on the first day of the 12th month in the lunar calendar, which falls on January 22 this year. The day is also known as the ‘Traditional Day of Offering’ as it is believed that on this day the people of Bhutan made their offering of grains to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the 17th century unifier of Bhutan, at Punakha Dzong. It’s a day when families come together to eat good food, play games such as archery, or go out on picnics. We wish you and your family a happy Chunipa Losar, and an abundance of peace, prosperity, love and kindness.
Losar Tashi Delek.

Every year, humans produce 300 million tonnes of plastic waste, including 11 million tonnes that eventually wind up in the ocean. By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in our seas.

We all have a role to play to : refuse plastic cutlery & straws, use refillable water bottles, bring your own shopping bags & avoid ocean-harming products.

Museums are full of stories – stories about history, culture, people and places. Visiting museums, especially historical museums, helps us uncover the complexities of our histories, expand our perspective, and deepen our understanding of the past. At the Ogyen Choling palace and museum in Bumthang you will find one of the country’s largest collections of artifacts and exhibits including ancient Bhutanese art, textile, arms and armor, masks, musical instruments, tools, household items and more. Originally built in the 19th century, the palace was reconstructed in 1898 after an earthquake destroyed the previous manor. Today, it is a lovingly preserved museum showcasing the lifestyle of aristocrats in ancient Bhutan. If you go to Bumthang, a visit to the Ogyen Choling palace and museum is a worthwhile trip.

We are a small nation, but we believe we can make a difference. When we come together, citizens and guests, we can emerge as a leading voice on pressing world problems such as climate action and sustainable development initiatives. We can show the world that it is possible to experience life differently, that other ways of being are within reach. We see great potential enabled by diverse, evolving culture, and our character – dependable, adaptable, responsible.

Bhutan offers rich culture, untouched nature, ancient ruins, incredible architecture and astonishing landscapes, but between the fluttering prayer flags dotting green hills and beautiful bridges you can glimpse a different Bhutan. Extremely well fed stray dogs napping on the warm asphalt on a humdrum afternoon, sounds of a distant prayer wheel turning in serene rhythm, broken occasionally by the soft whirring of concrete mixers and chatters of smartly dressed school children. Bhutan has the power to bewitch even the most jaded traveller.

Wake up to the rising sun lighting up the red and green corrugated rooftops of capital Thimphu, and the green surrounding hills, all the sharp edges softened by the warm, mellow rays. Thimphu makes one think of cardboard houses children make in school for science exhibitions and the kids would playfully paint them any colour they wanted.

Daga Dzong is also known as the Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong. The name is derived from the words Darkala, the region's guardian deity and Darkarnang meaning ‘the realm of white prayer flags’. Established in 1671, the fortress was the office of the Daga Penlop. Located atop a gentle hill, the dzong appears regal. The Daga Dzong houses interesting relics like the massive buffalo horn, supposedly discovered in the early 16th century by Daga Penlop Tempa Thinley.

Life often begins at the end of your comfort zone. From the bustling main avenue of capital Thimphu to the high remote mountain peaks – amid the gleaming white snow and cool glaciers rise great rivers that bring life to the sultry plains – Bhutan is yours to explore. Take only memories, leave only footprints.

The ultimate tryst of man and nature, the first International Snowman Race, considered the world’s toughest race, mimics the trail of the treacherous Snowman Trek, the purview of the elite athlete - as fewer have completed this grueling course than summited Mount Everest! 30 ultra-marathon athletes (including seven Bhutanese) will battle it out over 222 kilometers (138 miles) of wild, challenging terrain at an oxygen draining 5470m (17,946 feet).
The goal? Not a medal or trophy but a fervent and bold message for climate action and preservation of mountain ecosystems through a hitherto unseen level of daredevilry and exhilaration.

Do you ever think of the afterlife? Do you believe in rebirth? These are probably not questions one would ask in the midst of a vibrant, visually stunning festival such as the on-going Thimphu tshechu where the courtyard of Tashichhodzong comes alive with displays of lavish apparel, quite the contrast to the concept of impermanence. Bhutanese people view life and death as a continuum, death merely as a passage into the next life. The spirit lives on and karma comes full circle - This way of thinking humbles a person and kills the human ego. It is believed that the various compassionate as well as wrathful masked figures seen in tshechu will assist us in our journey to the afterlife, and watching the masked dances in this life will give us the courage to meet them after death. A wisp of morbidity lingers over the garishly spectacular exhibit of extravagance. Bhutan is a land of wonderful anomalies.

Born on 16th Oct, 2016, The Royal Highlander festival marks the celebration of the birth of his Royal Highness the Gyalsey; 400 years of Shabdrung Rimpoche; and the Rabjung (60 years cycle) birth year of Guru Rimpoche. It shares the beauty and the wonders of Gasa Dzongkhag through its nature, history and its age-old tradition and culture. The traditional offering of Buelwa (Gift offering) with Auley (traditional epic poem/song recitation dances and recitals) makes it the only sensory experience of its kind. Performances by Layaps, competitions on highland animals including the yaks, horses and mastiffs make it memorable. The 5th Royal Highlandar Festival will be held in Laya from 23rd to 24th October this year.

Happiness is still a place. Happiness is also people, education, wellbeing, family, friends, faith, trust, home, abundance and many more. Bhutan is beyond the idea of an imaginary, beautiful faraway utopia where life approaches perfection. In the highly volatile world, Bhutan has always paved its own pathway, guided by wisdom of its clever history and intelligent policies backed by science. Bhutan is a land whose strength comes out of its smallness, where innovation is not hindered by orthodoxy, where culture and people are ageless but progressive.
