After almost a year and a half Bhutan received its first tourist today.
Francis Bak from America is the first tourist to visit Bhutan amid the pandemic. It is her second visit to Bhutan. But unlike her first travel to Bhutan, this time, the 70-year-old will have to undergo the mandatory 21-day quarantine at her own expense. She will also have to undergo RT-PCR test upon completing quarantine before taking a tour of the country.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΉBhutan is known for its colorful festivals which take place at different times of the year all over the country.
During these festivals or Tsechus(10th day), various folk dances, masks dances/β€œCham” and other theatrical performances consisting of epics and battles are performed in honour of the 8th century Buddhist saint Guru PadmasambhavaπŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ.
Apart from imparting knowledge and blessings, these festivals also provide the people with a chance to meet and greet, wear their best attire/jewellery, take pictures and enjoy a picnic with family members and friends. The afternoon potluck is usually comprised of red rice, dried meats cooked with radish/dry chilli, momo, chilli cheese curry and boiled eggs. Lunch is followed by some local brew, dances and blessings.
It is a time and place where people from all corners and walks of life assemble to partake and immerse themselves in an ancient tradition and culture indegenious to Bhutan.

The timely inception of various monasteries and Dzongs around the country laid the very foundation of the buddhist culture found in modern day Bhutan.
One fine example is the 12th century monastery built by Gyalwa Lhananpa, initially called the Do Ngon Dzong (Blue Stone Dzong). After undergoing several expansions it was later renamed Tashi Chhoddzong (fortress of auspicious religion) by the great Zhanbdrung Ngawang Namgyal(the unifier) in 1641 AD making it the initial site for the Thimphu Tashichoddzong we see today. After suffering heavy damges during a fire in 1772 it was restored and finally named ~ Dechen Phodrang ~ (Palace of Great Bliss).
At present it houses around 450 novice monks studying a eight year course, after which they will attend higher studies. As it was the only form of formal education in 12th century, many families enrolled their sons in such institutes. Over the years the number of has dwindled but the ones that do enroll today are mostly devout.
The monastery is located in Thimphu(Capital) and it is a place worth visiting. Guests can interact with the monks and take a tour of the area. A perfect place for pictures and stories.
β˜†Being the oldest dzong, it has 12th-century paintings in the Guru Lhakhang, which are being restored by a United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) project.

We bid farewell to the winter for now and welcome the spring. The transition to summer in the Himalayas is simply a magnificent phenomena. It is a time when the birds, leaves, insects, flowers, animals and longer daylight make their much awaited return.
Therefore, making the month of March the most ideal time to visit Bhutan πŸ€—πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΉπŸ›©πŸ’―.
