Celebrating the First Sermon of Lord Buddha

On this auspicious 4th day of the 6th Lunar Month, we commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after his enlightenment. 🙏

Four Noble Truths: The Buddha revealed the foundational teachings of Buddhism:
1. Life is dukkha (suffering ).
2. Dukkha is driven by desire.
3. There is a way to be liberated from dukkha and desire.
4. That way is the Noble Eightfold Path.

May the wisdom of the Buddha's teachings illuminate our hearts!

The Buddha Dordenma statue in Thimphu is one of the largest and most magnificent Buddha statues in the world!

The Buddha Dordenma statue is a 169-foot-tall bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, sitting on a lotus throne. It is located on a hilltop in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, overlooking the beautiful Thimphu valley. The statue was built to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

But what makes this statue even more amazing is that it contains almost 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside its body, each of them gilded in gold. These statues represent the enlightened beings who have attained nirvana, the ultimate state of liberation from suffering. You can enter the statue and admire the thousands of Buddhas, as well as the elaborate altar and the meditation hall.

The Buddha Dordenma statue is not only a stunning sight, but also a sacred place of worship and pilgrimage for Buddhists and visitors alike. You can feel the serene and powerful energy of the Buddha as you walk around the statue, or join the locals in offering prayers, prostrating and circumambulating the statue. You can also enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the mountains from the statue’s base, or explore the nature park that surrounds it.

Khuru Chorten in Punakha is a sacred stupa that houses relics of Guru Rinpoche, Lord Buddha and various other Buddhist masters. The chorten (stupa) is the centerpiece of the complex with a white dome and a golden spire. Inside the chorten, there is a magnificent statue of Guru Rinpoche, who is revered as the second Buddha by the Tibetan and Bhutanese people. According to legends, the statue was supposed to be installed at Khujug La, a monastery in Wangdue Phodrang. The statue itself proclaimed Khuruthang to be it's destined place and therefore, no human force could carry the statue away.

Later Khenchen Pekar Jungney constructed a tiny temple and preserved this statue in it. Over the years, many renowned lamas like Lam Drukpa Kuenley, Ngawang Chogyal, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and other Buddhist masters sanctified the place. Later the name was changed to Guruthang when Drubthop Nagi Rinchen built a Lhakhang/Temple and installed the Guru statue. Guruthang means the plain or valley of the Guru, the teacher. Eventually Guruthang transformed to Khuruthang. You will also get to see the beautiful paintings and sculptures that adorn the walls and ceilings of the temple, depicting various aspects of Buddhist teachings and history.
