When the en Plein-Air art movement was being introduced in the western world in the 19th century, there was a parallel art exploration of the mindscape in the eastern world. The two worlds shared the artistic vision and harnessed passions to create an art scape, which inspired generations of artists over the past centuries.

The renaissance period (14-16 century) saw the emergence of the two greatest artists of the period: Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was creating the Mona Lisa in Paris, while Treasure Revealer Pema Lingpa (1450-1520) was revealing some of the rarest earth treasures and creating his signature mural paintings in central Bhutan (Tamzhing Temple in Bumthang). Kuzuzangpala!
Warm Greetings from the Kingdom of Bhutan!

Fall is the Season of Festival Marathon in Bhutan, the best time to enjoy the season’s harvests, colorful sights and sounds. Locals enjoy the well-deserved leisure time by reveling in the communal festivities, which connect Bhutan’s past and present, tradition and modernity, the worldly and the spiritual. Our popular featured festival is the well-attended JAMPA TEMPLE CONSECRATION FESTIVAL in Bumthang (2,800 masl), the cultural heartland of Bhutan.

Attend the popular Mewang or fire-blessing ceremony in the open ground, which is performed to exorcise human and non-human obstructive spirits called Jungpos. The fire is a symbolic burial of obstructive spirits and to purify and prepare the ground for the festival.

THE ROYAL HIGHLAND FESTIVAL (7th Edition)
Presenting Bhutan’s Nomadic Cultural Extravaganza

Duration: 10 Nights / 11 Days

Holidays Bhutan welcomes all travelers around the world to the 7th edition of the annual Royal Highland Festival featuring the last living nomadic herders across the northern highland belt of Bhutan.

This fixed journey combines the best of alpine trekking and cultural extravaganza, traversing majestic rugged ridges crisscrossing the northern frontiers of Bhutan.

Hundreds of nomadic herders - Layaps, Brokpas of Merak Sakten and semi-nomadic communities - gather at Laya (4,000 meters) to celebrate their diversity of cultures, customs, foods and many more. Laya, the festival venue, is truly a pristine alpine wonderland surrounded by some of the highest unclimbed Himalayan peaks in the world.

The physical and cultural activities throughout the journey include exploring landmark heritages and monuments, acclimatization hike on high-altitude mountain pass, outdoor wilderness camping, yak riding, high-altitude marathon with the highlanders, therapeutic soaking in natural hot spring, immersive village exploration and white-water rafting among others. To experience authentic hospitality, local homestays in Laya host accommodation and meals.

Bhutan is home to some of the most fragile glacial ecosystem on earth. To fully appreciate the beauty and majesty of the Himalayas, private helicopter excursion can be arranged with prior booking.

Referring to the festival dates of all past editions, the two-day Royal Highland Festival routinely takes place in late October. Holidays Bhutan will share the festival date as soon as it is officially announced by the Department of Tourism.

Holidays Bhutan is open to pre-booking inquiry, tour planning and customization to cater to your traveling needs and expectations. We look forward to hosting your unforgettable journey in Bhutan
