Along the Chamkhar River of Bumthang in central Bhutan, Wangduechhoeling Palace rises from the Jakar valley floor, surrounded by the verdant colors of the region’s rice fields. Constructed by Jigme Namgyel (father of the 1st King), the palace was the birthplace of the first King of Bhutan, Gongsa Ugyen Wangchuck. Wangduechhoeling became the seat of national power in the early twentieth century, housing the king’s offices and courts.
The Palace is not only the finest representation of traditional Bhutanese architecture, but it is also a symbol of peace and stability in Bhutan under the Wangchuck dynasty. The Palace tells us stories of how Bhutan, as a country, was established and how our culture and traditions were during the times of the first, second, and third kings.

Restoration and curation to offer the Palace as a Museum began in 2012 by The Bhutan Foundation.
Local partners as well as international partners include the Division for Conservation of Heritage Sites, Ministry of Home and Culture, Tsao & McKown Architects, the World Monuments Fund, and the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Constructed by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal from 1637, the dzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Buddhism, including the sacred Rangjung Kharsapani and the remains of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Terton Pema Lingpa. 1983

Drukair commences commercial air services with two 18-seater Dornier twin turbo propeller aircraft.

Drukair began operations from Paro with an 18-seat Dornier 228-200. Regular air service between Paro and Kolkata was established. This was the dawn of a new era in the kingdom’s march towards modernization, removing one of the major constraints to development of a land locked country.

Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Chhoden Wangchuck inaugurated the kingdom’s first historic air services between Paro and Kolkata International airport on February 11, 1983. Drukair began modestly with one aircraft and twice weekly flight between Paro and Kolkata.

Marking the beginning of air services in Bhutan, the Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs issued first day cover stamps in commemoration of Drukair, that were release by Her Royal Highness on the same day.

Welcome to ChangYul Park: A nature-inspired urban retreat for Thimphu dwellers! This 7 acre park sits neatly along and over the Wangchhu. Chang Yul Park is the seed design of future Thimphu and hopefully we will be encouraged to adapt and innovate from here on for all future public consciousness spaces.
Tashi Delek to the designers and the wonderful Desuups who built the park.

Tashichho Dzong (བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཆོས་རྫོང) is a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the city of Thimphu in Bhutan, on the western bank of the Wang Chu.
The original Thimphu dzong was built in 1216 by Lama Gyalwa Lhanapa (1164–1224), founder of the Lhapa branch of the Drikung Kagyu, at the place where Dechen Phodrang Monastery now stands on a ridge above the present dzong. In 1641 Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal took over that Dzong from the Lhapa Kagyu, reconsecrated, and renamed it Tashichö-Dzong. It was then established as the main seat of the Southern Drukpa Kagyu and the summer residence of the monastic body or sangha headed by Shabdrung Rinpoche.
Tashichö Dzong was again destroyed by fire three different times and seriously damaged by an earthquake. Each time it was rebuilt by the Desi and Je Khenpo of the time. In 1962, after the capital was moved from Punakha to Thimphu, the present Dzong was rebuilt by the third His Late Majesty The Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, as the seat of Government. Only the central Utse tower, the Lhakhang Sarp (new temple), and main Gönkhang (protector temple) remain from the earlier Dzong.

May 2nd is the birth anniversary of His Late Majesty The Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. During his 20-year reign the fundamental reorientation of Bhutanese society began. His Majesty not only achieved the reorganisation of society and government, but also consolidated Bhutan’s sovereignty and security…He was a forerunner among environmentalists in this part of the world and the Manas Sanctuary was established in 1966 as one of the first in the region. His late Majesty made sweeping political and social reforms, of which. perhaps, the most far reaching was the freedom granted to bonded labour of which the largest concentration was in Eastern Bhutan, transforming indentured labourers into sharecroppers and tenants. …
With prayers of gratitude and peace on the birth anniversary of His Late Majesty the Father of Modern Bhutan. 🙏💛🙏💛🙏💛

This February flight from New Delhi to Paro, Bhutan operates at 4am. As we turn left past Everest, there’s a feeling of exhilaration as sunlight floods into the aircraft cabin. Then, around 6 am, we descend into the dark folds of the Bhutanese Himalayas as though transitioning through some mystical time portal. Every window presents a different view but the one that takes my breath away every time, is the one of Dongkorla Lhakhang. Perched high up on a peak above Shaba, this monastery is steeped in legend. Strategically located to command a view over Paro, Chukha and Thimphu, this 17th century site was built by Terton Tshering Dorji, a speech reincarnation of The Shabdrung. They say that no one can thieve from this sacred site, but as we pass by below, I steal another glance of this gorgeous scene.
I am home.
Ready to welcome you.

No wars or conflicts can transcend the interludes that the longevity of love can inspire, providing leaders remain committed to the real spiritual mindfulness in the Dharma of humanity.

The first week in January. This year has begun with blessings and opportunities. I learnt the meanings of two beautiful tributes, and I gazed upon a pure child that will one day charm the world for her King. And I have heard wise individuals’ thoughts.
I have gained charge of a responsibility and the future commands a tough but wonderful climb empowered, inspired and in loyal service.

‘To our fellow Bhutanese living abroad, know that you are always in my thoughts. You are part of the reason why we conceived this Gelephu project. Even though you are away from home, I know your hearts are with us in Bhutan….The Gelephu project is to enable you to return …. together…….We wil establish a Special Administrative Region (SAR) in Gelephu. As our economic hub, the SAR wil have the autonomy to formulate laws and policies that are needed. It will have executive autonomy and legal independence………The purpose of establishing this SAR is to create a vibrant economic hub.…….. It wil be one-of-a-kind, anchored on the vision and values of GNH. It wil be a Mindfulness City, encompassing conscious and sustainable businesses, inspired by Buddhist spiritual heritage, and distinguished by the uniqueness of the Bhutanese identity……. Economic growth wil generate demand for goods and services. The benefits wil encompass al dzongkhags, especially farmers, providing niche and lucrative markets ni the country for al our products. With FDI, there wil be more jobs for the youth, with international salary scales and greater access to technology and skills ….. I want to emphasise three immediate priority areas that will support the Gelephu project: Energy, Connectivity, and Skills.…Bhutanese are loyal, responsible, capable and resilient. They are innately intelligent, and adept at learning new ideas and care deeply about our country and our future….. I will do everything in my power to realize this vision. I will put my own life on the line. And I will do it for your sake. Because you are an extraordinary and noble people. You are extraordinary in your devotion to one another and your love for the country… ‘ - His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan ( excerpts from the 116th National Day address).
