Held in the Kingdom's central administrative and religious center, Tashichhodzong, Thimphu Tshechu is one of the biggest and grandest religious and social celebrations in Bhutan. Although the public attends the festival over the course of three days, monks make preparations months in advance. The day and night before the actual festival, prayers and rituals are conducted to invoke the deity. For three days, mask dances are performed, like the Guru Tshengye (Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche), Shaw Shachi (Dance of the Stags), and others. It is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Kingdomโ€™s culture and mingle with locals who are dressed in their finest gho and kira.
This year, Thimphu Tshechu will happen from 24th-26th September.

The annual tshechus are the most popular festivals in Bhutan. Held in reverence of Guru Rinpochoe, the ta***ic Buddhist vajra master who spread Buddhism in Bhutan, tshechus are usually held in the courtyard of the Dzongs of respective districts or courtyards of temples. Itโ€™s an excellent opportunity to experience one of the most visible manifestations of Bhutanโ€™s rich cultural and Buddhist heritage, and catch the locals dressed in their best attire.

Chimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist temple located near Lobesa, about 30-minute drive from Punakha town. It was built by Ngawang Choegyel after the site was blessed by Lama Drukpa Kunley, famously known as the Divine Madman. People visit the temple mainly to seek fertility blessings from Lama Drukpa Kunley. Prayer flags adorn the path that leads to the temple from the Yuwakha village, and houses in the village have paintings of phalluses on their walls. Itโ€™s quite a sight!

Today the mission to bring the voices of the Himalayas to action began. Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk presented at ICIMOD and we shared the storytelling vision of the project to reach the world at COP 28 Dubai Climate Change Conference 2023 (UNFCCC). The bottle of water Jamyang is riding with contains glacier lake water from Bhutanโ€™s Thorthomi lake that threatens downstream lives and livelihood as warming fills it beyond capacity-a now common issue effecting communities in Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Pakistan.

It was followed by a thoughful meeting with Director General Pema Gyamtsho, Second Party President of the Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly of Bhutan from 2013 -2020. Inspiring work and advice from inspiring leaders, we are honored to have the support of this organization!
