WHO IS SIR SERETSE KHAMA?

July 1 is the birthday of Sir Seretse Khama , the man who led the nation of Bechuanaland currently Botswana out of colonialism and laid the foundation for a modern democracy in his country.
On 30 September 1966 Bechuanaland became an independent country of Botswana , with Khama as its president .

Born into an influential royal family of what was then the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland, he was educated abroad in neighbouring South Africa and in the United Kingdom. He married a British woman, Ruth Williams, which as a union between a black man and a white woman was controversial, particularly with the National Party government in South Africa as well as among the British and the Bangwato. Khama led his country's independence movement.

He founded the Botswana Democratic Party in 1962 and became Prime Minister in 1965. In 1966, Botswana gained independence and Khama was elected as its first president. During his presidency, the country underwent rapid economic and social progress

He held this post until his death in 1980

Happy Birthday

June 16 is 167th days of the year in the Greogorian calender ;198 days remains until end of the year .
16 1976 Uprising that began in Soweto and spread countrywide profoundly changed the socio-political landscape in South Africa. Events that triggered the uprising can be traced back to policies of the Apartheid government that resulted in the introduction of the Bantu Education Act in 1953. The rise of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) and the formation of South African Students Organisation (SASO) raised the political consciousness of many students while others joined the wave of anti-Apartheid sentiment within the student community. When the language of Afrikaans alongside English was made compulsory as a medium of instruction in schools in 1974, black students began mobilizing themselves. On 16 June 1976 between 3000 and 10 000 students mobilized by the South African Students Movement's Action Committee supported by the BCM marched peacefully to demonstrate and protest against the government’s directive. The march was meant to culminate at a rally in Orlando Stadium.

On their pathway they were met by heavily armed police who fired teargas and later live ammunition on demonstrating students. This resulted in a widespread revolt that turned into an uprising against the government. While the uprising began in Soweto, it spread across the country and carried on until the following year.

The aftermath of the events of June 16 1976 had dire consequences for the Apartheid government. Images of the police firing on peacefully demonstrating students led an international revulsion against South Africa as its brutality was exposed. Meanwhile, the weakened and exiled liberation movements received new recruits fleeing political persecution at home giving impetus to the struggle against Apartheid.

Moremi gorge is one of the most spectacular gorges in the country. It consists of a number of pools with waterfalls and outstanding natural scenic beauty. The gorge is part of the geological features that developed as a result of the weathering of the resistant quartzite of the Precambrian rocks (about 1700 million years old) of the Tswapong Hills. Moremi village, which moved to its current location in the 1940’s, is the ancestral village of Bapedi/Batswapong of the Tswapong Hills. The village, which was ruled by Kgosi Mapulane, was originally (in the early 1800s) located at the site where this gorge is found.

IMPALA(AEPYCEROS MELAMPUS)

Best places to see Impala in Botswana

Common throughout Botswana but are widespread in the northern regions of Chobe and forested parts of the Okavango Delta. The impala is rarely seen west of the Delta or south of the Nxai Pan.

Observations

Late April into May is a time when strange sounds echo across the northern Botswana wilderness. The sounds resemble rumbling roars and snorting. These are the sounds of male impala during the rutting [mating] season. Male impala are extremely busy at this time of the year - mating with the females in his harem while trying to keep other males away.

The impala is the most widespread antelope in northern Botswana and due to its abundance this elegantly beautiful antelope is generally overlooked by visitors on safari - except when it is hanging in a tree or being eaten or chased.

Impala, Springbok and Predators

Impala do not generally occur in the more arid regions of Southern Africa and for this reason the distribution patterns oppose those of the springbok - with overlapping in the distributions happening in only a few places.

In Botswana there is an overlapping of the distribution of the two species in Nxai Pan. It is a common occurrence to see the two species around the same waterhole in Nxai Pan - an unusual scene in other parts of southern Africa.

As they are the most abundant antelope they are the most common prey for predators and in particular of wild dogs. When startled by predators a group of impala will scatter in a number of directions in an attempt to confuse the predators.

Although not the fastest runners impala are very agile, being able to jump as high as three metres. Personal observations have recorded impala jumping more than two and a half meters high and ten meters long.
The impala is an important prey species for several carnivores, such as cheetahs, leopards and lions.

MEERKATS

The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) or suricate is a small mongoose found in southern Africa. It is characterised by a broad head, large eyes, a pointed snout, long legs, a thin tapering tail, and a brindled coat pattern. The head-and-body length is around 24–35 cm (9.4–13.8 in), and the weight is typically between 0.62 and 0.97 kg (1.4 and 2.1 lb). The coat is light grey to yellowish brown with alternate, poorly defined light and dark bands on the back. Meerkats have foreclaws adapted for digging and have the ability to thermoregulate to survive in their harsh, dry habitat. Three subspecies are recognised.

In the morning the pack leaves the den to search for food—mostly beetles, caterpillars, termites, spiders, and scorpions but also lizards, birds, small snakes, and rodents. They forage five to eight hours per day, spaced one to five metres apart while softly vocalizing to maintain contact.

As they forage in broad daylight in the open and away from the den, meerkats are susceptible to attack, especially by jackals and raptors. While digging, they glance around frequently for these predators. The prospect of being taken by surprise is met by sentinel behaviour. One meerkat takes up a raised position on a termite mound or tree branch, where it sits erect and watches. The others are aware the sentinel is on duty and can thus spend more time digging. If the sentinel sees a predator approaching, it alerts the others with a high-pitched call, and the pack scatters for cover. Pack members take turns doing this in no particular order; they do not, however, act as sentinels before they have eaten their fill, benefitting first from the early warning. Sentinels, therefore, are not really the altruists they were once thought to be.

Where to stay to meet meerkats:

Camp Kalahari, Jack’s Camp, San Camp, or Meno a Kwena (as a full day excursion)
