Wild Dogs Group

Botswana is one of the best places to see and photograph wild dogs. The overall population in Africa is probably sitting somewhere between 3000 and 5000 with over 700 alone found in Botswana, the majority of which are found in Moremi, The panhandle and Chobe region .

Wild Dogs are highly social with a strict hierarchal structure lead by an alpha male and alpha female.

They are easily recognized by thier irregular mottled coat, which features patches of red, black, brown, white and yellow fur. Their coats can vary hugely in colour making them easy to identify. Unlike other canines their tracks are easily distinguished from other dogs as they only have 4 toes per foot instead of 5. Their larges ears are also very recognisable and often then first feature picked up when spotting them in the thick bush found throughout Northern Botswana.

Do you know that despite their distinctive features Crocodiles and birds are somehow each other's closest relative. In fact, crocodilians and birds are the sole survivors of a much larger and more diverse group called the archosaurs. Dinosaurs (birds) split from crocodiles at some point in the distant past, specifically sometime in the Triassic. Interestingly, there is a fossil animal that showed up around when this split should’ve occurred. Carnufex was discovered in North Carolina in 2003, according to PLOS. North Carolina State University reports that researchers led by Lindsay Zanno reconstructed Carnufex and found the creature to have a combination of crocodile and bird traits. Carnufex seems to represent the beginning of a split between what would one day become modern birds and those that would become modern crocodilians.
