Highlights of high season - Sian Simba.
The month of May kicks off high season in Northern Botswana and Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls maintaining good levels at the same time as the natural vegetation in Zambezi National Park slowly start to dry up, the combination of both enabling the best time of year to view the falls and enhanced game viewing in the national park.

A mobile safari during this time can be intense. Herds are getting larger and limited access to water can create concentrated areas of game viewing. The bush is bare as the trees loose their leaves, increasing your visibility for those predators. Weather is pleasant for camping and the night skies are thrilling.

Highlights of Botswana's high season - Mogogelo Camp.
High season months are also our winter months. It is during this cool period that wild dogs will choose for whelping. They will look for a suitable den sight and remain here to raise the pups. During this time the range of the pack is reduced making it a great time to see the African wild dog.

Highlights of Botswana's high season - Camp Khwai.
Located on the Khwai River, a constant water source as the surrounding landscape dries. This attracts elephant, buffalo and in their shadows lions and hyenas. Hyenas will start denning during this time. Water-adapted antelope, the red lechwe and waterbuck are common sights in this ecosystem at this time of year.

During this dry part of the year animals continue to migrate to search for any available water and food sources. The Kazuma Forest Reserve and the pan provide just that during high season. Home to a wide variety of animals, predators and birds.

"It's a long drive down a washboarded road to get there (or you can fly!) but worth the effort. We were greeted by staff with a song and cold towels, and they never stopped looking after us!
The tents are well appointed with comfy beds and comforters (it gets cold there at night!) and we were serenaded by wild animals throughout the night.
Food is first rate, with a good selection of wine. One night, dinner consisted of traditional fare with the staff putting on a song and dance show.
There is a deck overlooking the wetland and river with a warm fire at night, under a sky filled with stars. Our guide, Connie, was new to the Khwai concession but even after a month she knew it well, and thanks to 15 years of guiding at Chobe, she knew how to track and find animals.
The highlight was watching a pack of wild dogs hunting impala, but the Khwai concession and Moremi park are teeming with wildlife. we stayed 3 nights and when the staff bid us goodbye with a song, I had a lump in my throat.

A family affair!
"Wildtracks safari lodge is a serene, family-run eco lodge set in the forest on the edge of a private game reserve. The well-decorated dining room, bar and sitting area with overstuffed couches under a single, massive thatch roof is a great place to hang out if you are not sitting around the equally massive fire pit.
The rooms are lovely - well appointed with comfy beds and a large outdoor shower. the thing that sets this place apart is the sense of family - we felt so welcome here!
The food is outstanding, cooked from the heart by one of the family members! We enjoyed touring their private game reserve, including a visit to a water hole by a very large herd of zebra, and seeing dozens of bird species.
An afternoon game drive was followed by hors d'oeuvres and wine, watching giraffe silhouettes in the sunset, and spotting a honey badger crossing the road in the dark on the way back. Staff arranged a boat cruise, lunch and game drive at Chobe River, which was also first rate. We felt incredibly welcome here in this special place."

"This was our second visit to jackalberry, the first time we were only there for 2 nights and because we loved it so much we wanted a longer stay. Our first afternoon we were getting ready for a safari drive when OP introduced herself. I recognised her then when we mentioned about being there last year she recognised me and gave me the biggest longest hug ever. It was beautiful.
Shime was our guide for the week and he was amazing. It was so obvious that he loved the bush and the wildlife. Because we didn’t have a list of animals that we wanted to see and were quite happy just driving around seeing what was out and if anything exciting was happening we would drive over. Also he was so in tune with the animals, he would sit and talk to them in a quiet voice. He also took us to some lovely sites for our morning tea.
Back at camp all the staff are very attentive, Spa the chef took time to find out our needs (especially as I don’t eat much and I’m very fussy) . They have cultural nights and the staff sing and dance. OP takes time to explain in English what it’s about. OP also takes time to talk to her guests. I really enjoyed our talks by the fire after dinner.
The camp is surrounded by bush land and the river so having your tent by the river is so pretty. We loved our stay so much and are hoping to return sometime. Keep up the good work and OP I hope to see you again to continue our chats by the fire.

"We stayed in a riverfront tent (a must). The view is fantastic and we loved hearing the hippo's! The rooms were exactly as pictured. Very clean and comfortable. Staff was very pleasant and OP, the manager went out of her way to address any needs we had. The meals were excellent and safari's were top notch. Our guide knew where to go to find the animals and provided so much education regarding the land and animals. We could not have asked for a better experience."

"Two days here just wasn't enough...what a gem of a place in Kasane! OP is a standout as the manager...she is warm and welcoming and fantastic at not only caring for her guest but also doing an amazing job leading her staff! The accommodations are beautiful, the food is amazing and Blackie the bartender was always making us fun drinks! Can not wait to come back and stay longer."

"Xaoo Safari Camp was a wonderful place to spend a couple of days. there are only 4 tents so it will never be crowded!
We had the place to ourselves, so we felt like it was our own private resort! The staff welcomed us with a song, and never stopped looking after us. The tents are comfortable and well appointed, and the outdoor shower under a canopy of trees was wonderful.
Dinner is served on the spacious deck overlooking a wetland full of birds, paired with South African wine. We had a fantastic guide for game tours in the nearby reserve. we also did a boat ride and walking tour - it was great to get a different perspective out of the vehicle and on foot amongst herds of elephants. Highly recommended!"
