We've just been sent some lovely pictures of our LandCruisers taken last year by our clients and .

A self drive safari is a truly amazing experience. Having your own vehicle and itinerary and being able to really immerse yourself in the beauty of the Botswana bush is very special indeed.

You can really step away from your every day life and discover a new rhythm based on a different schedule. Simple things like building a fire, putting up your tent and finding a great place to stop for lunch are all priorities - as is enjoying the beautiful light that changes throughout the day.

And all this is in addition to the excitement of 4x4 driving and spotting some amazing wildlife.

Hello all 😁 for our first post in a little while, we wanted to share some lovely feedback from our client, Richie, who came on safari in May.

"Firstly, as a novice to roof top, 4x4 camping and a first time visitor to Chobe, Khwai and Moremi....I don't think I could have chosen a vehicle that was as robust and reliable as the Toyota your team provided. At the end of the day and the start of the next, the camping equipment supplied is the absolute bare minimum yet everything you could possibly need. It's so well thought out and so simply stored, it makes pack out and pack up a dream."

He also sent some amazing pictures from his trip, which we are excited to share.

We've said it before, but we love seeing our client's photos - each trip is unique and it's always amazing to see what adventures they have had and what they have seen.

Last year Patrick Grant Photography came on safari and took some incredible photos (which we have previously posted). He has very kindly sent some more pictures of his trip - and in addition to the wildlife he also took this beautiful picture of the Milky Way.

Hyenas - cat or dog?

A fascinating - and possibly misunderstood - member of African wildlife - hyenas are a mass of contradictions.

A hyena is actually neither part of the cat or dog family - it has it's own small group of carnivores comprising three different types of hyena and the aardwolf. Genetically it's closer to a cat but there are some part of a hyena that are more dog-like.

The hyenas pictured here (thank you to Lulu Greyling and JKRHancock for the photos) are spotted hyenas - which are the type most frequently seen in Botswana and Southern Africa. With awesomely powerful jaws and large heads and shoulders, hyenas are fearsome nocturnal predators who catch prey by doggedly pursuing and then dismembering their kills.

They are also extremely vocal - once heard, you never forget their laughs, moans, cries, yelps, bellows, chatter and whoops.

Megaherbivores 🦛🦛🦛

Hippos are another example of the fantastical creatures you can find in Botswana. These semi-aquatic giants are active mainly at night covering up to 8km of territory for feeding, they can open their mouths up to 150 degrees and they also secrete their own sunscreen!

Our guests have taken some fabulous photos including the hippo who is showing us just how wide he can open his mouth and the one with the mother hippo trying to move the crocodile out of the spot she wanted to use to sun herself and her calf. We also have the photos of the dead hippo being eaten by a crocodile, but that illustrates the circle of life.

Finally we have the big fella who we've posted before - hippos weigh between 1.4-5 tonnes but we think he might just weigh more than that!

Thank you to for the pictures 📷

For more information on where are the best places to see hippos - or any of southern Africa's amazing animals - please contact us at [email protected]

Antelopes! Here at Travel Adventures Botswana, we love antelopes and we wanted to talk about some familiar - and some less familiar - ones that you might see on safari. The roan antelope, waterbuck, springbok, impala, oryx and kudu are all found in Botswana but you are much more likely to see some than others.

The impala and springbok can be widely found across the area and are some of the prettiest and most graceful animals you will see.

The oryx (also known as the gemsbok), water buck, roan antelope and kudu are much larger than the relatively petite impala and springbok and you might see larger herds of females and young whereas the males are often more solitary - and therefore harder to spot!

Out of this group, the roan antelope is the most rare and endangered - so it's always fabulous to see one - but you should be able to spot a few of the others, either in open grassland, near water or sheltering under some trees.

We can't talk about antelopes without commenting on the impressive horns that they keep for life. The horns come in both straight (roan antelope, water buck, oryx, spring box) and curved (kudu & impala) - the longest horns belong to the oryx, which can grow to over 70cm. Both males and females have fascinating & clever facial and body markings designed to camouflage them from the ever present threat of from predators.

Come and see them for yourself - contact [email protected] to book or find out more.
