Taking meat into Botswana and Namibia
We receive regular questions about taking meat and other fresh produce into Botswana and Namibia from South Africa. Due to the FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) outbreak in Limpopo, no meat may cross the border from South Africa to Namibia or Botswana. This regulation includes biltong, animal hides, dairy products and eggs. At some of the border posts you might even find they confiscate fruit and vegetables. This means that canned products and UHT products are the best option until this ban is lifted.

SPOTLIGHT ON: CAMP OKUTI

Camp Okuti lies alongside the Maunachira River, which flows through the Xakanaxa Lagoon in Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve. It is a relatively small and is close to Camp Xakanaxa, but Okuti is highly innovative in design.

The camp has five twin-bedded units, each with an en-suite bathroom, hot and cold running water and a flush toilet. Two additional family units consists of two spacious rooms. Curved “tents” sit upon raised teak decks, each with a balcony with views on the river and an outdoor but private bath. All the chalets have wooden floors and are similar in style to Okuti’s main areas.

The main reception, lounge and dining area sit under the beehive-style thatched roofs of five huge rondavels. These are furnished in a contemporary style, with smooth wooden floors, comfortable woven seating and various ethnic carvings. Adobe walls beneath a high, tunnel-like roof define the large lounge, which culminates in a partly open area with great views across the lagoon and floodplain. Similar in construction is the dining room.

Safari activities at Okuti revolve around open-topped 4WD game drives and motorboat trips on the stunning Xakanaxa Lagoon – all escorted by the camp's experienced safari guides. However, night drives, walks and off-road driving are not permitted. Boat trips on Xakanaxa Lagoon are a major highlight at Okuti - a treat for those visitors who are avid birders.

Camp Okuti has no direct phone, fax or e-mail service. There is intermittent cell phone service at some places in the reserve. Camp Okuti also does not have TV or radio.
