It is Endangered Species day and today we would like to honor the African Wild Dog. The African Wild Dog scientifically known as Lycaon Pictus are known as incredibly social animals that are devoted to teamwork within their packs. Advanced communication and a complex social structure help them in all aspects of life like hunting, knowing family roles and staying safe.

Despite them working togther to survive, Wild Dogs face the biggest threat from Human Wildlife conflict as it accounts for half of their deaths. This is often due to the misplaced belief that wild dogs are targeting livestock, even though this has been proven to be extremely uncommon in multiple studies. These factors, among others, have resulted in wild dogs being listed as an endangered species by the IUCN.

It's always a pleasure to get great feedback from clients that book and travel through us.

The Steiers started with an overnight at Ntwetwe Pans where they did quad biking and interacted with Meerkats.

The next day they did a 45 minute Scenic heli-flight over the Okavango Delta, giving them an eagle eye's view of mass animals. Mokoro was a must do for this couple, cruising in a traditional dugout boat, just the perfect way to relax after a scorching day.

Last but not least was a full day game drive into the Moremi Game Reserve , the perfect way to wrap up their stay. Great game sightings were spotted. They saw pretty much everything except for a leopard. Maybe a good enough reason for them to visit Botswana again? 😀

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲

Did you know, that the human population in Botswana is currently 2.3 million, and despite being home to the world's largest elephant population, our numbers of these magnificent creatures are estimated at just 130,000 - and decreasing rapidly. Today, on World Animal Day, we are honoring these gentle giants, who continue to be under severe threat as the illegal trade in ivory grows around the world. Conservation and preservation is vital to help maintain our ecosystems - how are you doing your part?

Some interesting facts about elephants:

🇧🇼 The Setswana name for Elephant is Tlou.

🧠 They are highly intelligent animals with complex emotions, feelings, compassion and self-awareness - just like humans. They are also one of very few species to recognize themselves in a mirror!

🐘The gestation period of an elephant is 22 months. That's almost 2 years, the longest pregnancy of any mammal!

😍 Like humans, elephants mourn the death of their love ones. They gently touch
and caress the skull of deceased loved ones with their trunks, and will pause for several minutes of silence in the place where their loved one dies, even several years
after their death. An elephant never forgets.

💪Elephant trunks have over 40,000 muscles which are used for breathing, smelling and communicating. They are capable of picking up something as large and heavy as an average-sized horse to something as tiny as a grain of rice.

🤱Elephants have deep family bonds and strong maternal instincts. The herd is led by the matriarch (the female head of a family.) Calves are raised by the entire herd. When males are about 12 years old, they leave the herd to live on their own. The females will often stay with their mothers their whole lives so elephants often become great-grandmothers.
