NB: Babies strain & cry a bit when they poo, but it does not mean there is a problem, as long as poo is soft and easy to pass.

Breastfeeding Poo
• The lovely mustard yellow.
• Loose in texture & smells slightly sweet.
• May be grainy & curdles at times.
• Baby may poo during and after feeds.
• Other babies may poo once every few days or once weekly. It is not a problem as long as baby poos are soft pass easily.
• Moms always get worried when babies pass this runny poo, but it is normal in breastfed babies.

Baby Self Feeding Benefits :

1. Enhances developing eaters sensory skills such as;
a. Food taste
b. Texture
c. Smell
d. Colour
e. Temperature of food

2. Learn to tune into natural hunger cues & stop eating when full (an important life skil).

3. Moms & dads, I encourage you to allow babies to feed themselves eventhough it seems messy, some babies start holding onto their feeding bottles at age 6 months (Baby Led Weaning -BLW), while attempting to feed solids from 9 months. It enhances development of fine motor skills by holding on to that spoon & eye coordination to the mouth which inturn plays an important role later in holding a pencil to draw, colour & write.

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES IN THIS REGARD IN ORDER TO MOTIVATE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME👏👏

Breastmilk is the best food for infants and babies because it contains all food elements necessary for the growth & development of the little ones. Hence at 3 Mothers we promote breastmilk storage so as to continue feeding the baby even in the abscence of the mom.

Goodbye winter! Hello Spring!

For many, Spring is exciting - at last warmer weather is coming, there's the energy of new growth and summer days ahead. But for others, it's a time of misery, as they suffer through red, watering eyes and itchy noses, and sneezing multiple times during the day. Not only that, sometimes it's not quite clear just what your symptoms mean: do you have hay fever, an allergy or is it sinus?
Seek medical attention soon.

Happy to all the amazing midwives out there! 🤰🏻👩🏻‍⚕‍🩺😊 Thank you for all you do!💕

2021 Theme: Follow the data, invest in midwives –and it is through this lens that ICM will lead the ongoing and growing efforts to centre midwives as fundamental to ending preventable maternal and newborn death and achieving SDG 3.1 (reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100 000 live births by 2030).

Reminder to all parents (Hints):
Always keep an eye on your baby, no baby should be left unattended.
If you disregard the above, the following may be happening to your baby in an instance:
1. Exposure to household dangers such as ingestion of household cleaning chemicals, paraffin, cosmetics e.t.c
2. Road accidents, baby gets out of home through an unlocked gate.
3. Drowning
4. Chokes via ingestion of other materials
5. Burns
6. R**e
7. Kidnapping
These are some of the examples which parents expose their children to by choice, as they always choose to focus on their electronic gadgets like your smart phones, laptops navigating social media.
Therefore, parents remember whenever your child is quite & out of your site, expect the worst.

HOW TO COPE AS A NEW DAD
1. Do not be anxious about handling your newborn
2. Hold baby confidently, it will be safe & secure in your strong arms & will respond to you.
3. Take time to connect by looking at baby, fix your eyes on each other.
4. Smile, talk to baby & watch.
Your baby will mimic & copy everything you do.
NB: Moms give dad some time to connect with baby, do not rush into demanding the baby to be brought back to you, this is a usual scenario & it defeats the bond that is expected between dad & baby.

BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING AND LACTATION SUPPORT.
When it comes to feeding your baby, it is hard to beat the benefits of breastfeeding. Since moms are the only ones who can breastfeed, others may feel left out during feeding times. Being a new parent is tiring! Feeding is not the only way to bond with a baby. There are many ways that friends and family can be supportive when a mother breastfeeds.
Breast milk: …

CONTAINS THE PERFECT BALANCE OF NUTRIENTS to help your baby fight infection and common childhood illnesses …
Is CONVENIENT, ALWAYS AVAILABLE, AND IS DELIVERED at the right temperature …
HELPS mom’s uterus return to its pre-pregnant state …
REDUCES the risk of breast cancer for mom …
SAVES money

What do I need to know?
 Breast milk provides all the food and water that your baby needs during the first 6 months of life.

 Make sure you feed your baby the first yellowish milk known as colostrum.

 Colostrum protects your baby from many diseases.

 Exclusive breastfeeding means giving breast milk only, and nothing else (no other milks, foods or liquids, not even sips of water), except for medicines prescribed by a doctor or nurse.

 Feeding your baby both breast milk and other foods or liquids, including infant formula, animal milks, or water (called ‘mixed feeding’) before 6 months reduces the amount of milk that you produce and can make your baby sick.

 If you have trouble practicing exclusive breastfeeding, discuss your situation with a trained counsellor.

Black Poo
• Related to iron supplementation.
• Iron fortified formula.

Blood in Poo
• Bloody poo can indicate constipation.
• Blood in breast milk from cracked ni***es.
• Food allergies.
Seek Medical attention.

Green Poo
• Jaundice can cause green poos and will wear off when jaundice is resolved.
• Formula fortified with iron.
• Mom eating a lot of greens.
• Side effects of medications.

NB: When in doubt, always seek medical attention to avoid complications.

02/11/2020

Diarrhoea

• Poo is very runny.
• Poos more often and larger amount than normal.
• Poo is explosive and spurts out of baby’s bottom.
• IF baby is breast fed, there is less likelihood of experiencing diarrhoea. Unlike bottle fed whereby contamination of feeding equipment can occur.
• Diarrhoea could be related to:
a) Infection such as Gastroenteritis
b) Reaction to medication
c) Too much fruit or juice
d) Allergy to certain food

26/10/2020

NB: Babies strain & cry a bit when they poo, but it does not mean there is a problem, as long as poo is soft and easy to pass.

Constipated Poo
• Baby pushes hard when it poos and can change skin colour.
• Poo is small, dry hard pellets.
• Constipation can also be caused by:
a) Incorrect mixing of formula feeds
b) Fever
c) Dehydration
d) Changes in fluid intake
e) Diet change
f) Certain medications
NB: Increase baby’s fluid intake, give water once you start solids, give pureed fruit as-well.

13/10/2020

NB: Babies strain & cry a bit when they poo, but it does not mean there is a problem, as long as poo is soft and easy to pass.

Starting Solids Poo (Pregnancy Guide)
• Poo changes with what baby eats.
• For instance, if baby ate pureed carrot, poo can be bright orange, peas it can be bright green.
• Fibre rich foods such as beans, raisins and others will pass straight through and end up in baby nappy.
• This is the most terrifying one I got from parents, if baby had a banana, poo may come up looking like it has some tiny worms which are fibre parts of a banana. This will change as baby grows and now able to digest a lot of fibre.
• As baby moves in to eating a lot of solids, poo becomes thicker, darker and a lot smellier.

Bottle Fed Poo (Pregnancy Guide 2019)

• Babies need to poo daily to feel comfortable and avoid constipation.
• Poo is bulkier in texture than that of breast-fed babies, because formula milk cannot be digested as fully as breast milk.
• Poo can be pale yellow, brown/greenish and strong smelling.
• Babies are liable to constipation.
• May poo up to 5 times a day initially and after few months, it may decrease to once.

Baby Poo
It always amazes me what parents do especially inspection of baby poo. Unfortunately, they get stresses up by many ideas their get from people surrounding them regarding the wrong colour, texture, enough/not enough poo. Baby poo is dependent on the following:
• Age of baby
• Breastfed or bottle fed
• Started solids?
This week, we shall talk about Newborn poo, following consecutive weeks on weekly basis, we shall share Breastfeeding poo, Bottle fed poo and finally starting solids poo.
Newborn Poo
• Known as Meconium, dark green/black colour
• Sticky
• This is mainly bile, mucous, amniotic fluid & dead skin cells that have collected in baby’s intestines while in womb.
• It is always difficult to wipe off but be happy that your baby’s bowels are working normally.
• Usually passed within 12 hours post-delivery.
• This process is sped up by baby taking up colostrum, which has a laxative effect.
• By the 2nd day, baby moves to a greener and then typical breast-fed poo (mustard yellow & very soft to liquid).

Happy World Breastfeeding Week | August 1, 2020 - August 7, 2020

“Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet”.

Support mums to breastfeed anytime, anywhere! .Breastfeeding provides every child with the best possible start in life. It delivers health, nutritional and emotional benefits to both children and mothers. And it forms part of a sustainable food system. But while breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not always easy. Mothers need support – both to get started and to sustain breastfeeding.

Facts of the day: (Pegasuskits)
It's a hard truth to accept that mucus is actually highly beneficial to our health.
 The truth is, mucus assists our immune systems by acting as a natural filter for all those microbes that we are constantly exposed to.
 A major component of mucus, is mucin which is a viscous substance acting as a selective barrier and lubricant.
 Mucins seem to prevent lung infections by making it more difficult for microbes to attach to the surface of lung tissue.
 It does this by preventing bacterial biofilms (sticky, thick groups of more virulent bacteria (often resistant to antibiotics) from causing infections.
 Mucins can prevent Candida hyphae (yeast cell filaments) formation which helps to diminish virulence.
 Another task of mucus is to ‘encapsulates’ (engulf) bacteria and viruses and help to expel them from the body.
