We offer two short (three hour) routes and two departure times: 7am and 2pm. The Viva Verde route includes a walking tour of a private nursery established over 15 years ago, accessible only by boat. Your guides will identify local fruit and ornamental trees, and many species of orchids and bromiliads. Countless birds and butterflies can be seen here. This route also includes visiting a bird island with White Ibis and other species. The second route option travels through meandering channels and through “tunnels” of overhanging vegetation until we reach the tranquil waters of the inner lagoon. We will visit isolated small mangrove cayes in the center of the lagoon where many species of birds nest. Throughout your tour, our guides will share their knowledge of the area’s natural and cultural history.

Why are mangroves important? Watch the full video on IG TV • Our partner restores and replenishes coral reefs in southern Belize. But they also help mangrove conservation. Many of the marine life 🐠 🐬 🐢 start life in the safety of coastal mangrove lagoons before they move out to coral reefs and sea grass forests. lives in , which shares this lagoon with the village of . Fragments of Hope offers early morning educational kayaking tours through Placencia lagoon. Its mangroves form canals from the lagoon to the ocean. We saw manatees, dolphins, and eagle rays in the lagoon, many with their young, playing without fear of big predators 🦈 & big 🛥. The mangroves provide 🎣 such as snook & mangrove 🦀 to fishermen who sell 🐠 at markets and restaurants in Placencia.
Franco said that mangroves and coral work together like walls of defense to protect villages by absorbing winds and waves from hurricanes and storms. If heavy winds get past reef barriers, lines of mangroves absorb waves and gale force wind. Because of rapid housing development for tourism and international 🏠 buyers in Placencia, local young people can’t find space or affordable housing. Some are clearing mangroves on common land to build homes. Unsustainable building development for tourism is leading to sand banks being dredged for nice ocean and lagoon views, without mangroves. Franco worries that all these mangroves will disappear in the future. 📹 by: / Lei Katof
