📍Goff's Caye, Belize

The cayes (pronounced "keys" 🔑) are a series of small islands strung along the length of the Belize Barrier Reef.

While we were in Belize, we were blessed to have the opportunity to be invited to a Belizean birthday party where we took a boat 45 minutes out into the Caribbean Sea to a tiny island, Goff's Caye.

This island needs to be seen firsthand to truly understand how beautiful it is! 🏝

This tiny 1.2 acre island boarders the reef so that you can literally walk out into the water right up to a coral formation; the water is both crystal clear [so that you can see all the fish, coral and shells around you] and brilliantly turquoise [a more vibrant color than you can imagine]; because of its location, the island was littered with pieces of coral, conch shells and other treasures washed up onto the beaches.

It was probably my favorite day of our trip because we got to meet so many amazing local people, enjoy just hanging out with them and experience a beautiful location.

📍High Temple, Lamani Mayan Ruins Archeological Site, Belize

Lamani Mayan Ruins (meaning Submerged Crocodile 🐊 in Mayan) was definitely a highlight of our trip. To access this archeological site, we had to take 1 hour boat ride down the New River -- it was like a river boat jungle safari; then arriving you can't see any of the temples or buildings from the river... Just jungle. Once inside the ruins are incredible!

The best part? Climbing to the top of each one and looking at the surrounding jungle from a bird's eye (or howler monkey's 🙉) view!

It is believed that Belize was the heart of the Mayan civilization from 250 A.D. to 900 A.D. Though there is evidence of Mayan occupation in Belize as early as 1500 B.C.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world! 🌎
The country has almost 200 miles of continuous barrier reefs and visibility up to 200 feet.

One of the most amazing experiences during this snorkeling trip was Shark-Ray Alley; there we got to swim with nurse sharks and sting rays... IN THE WILD. This wasn't a tourist attraction with animals in cages. These were sharks and rays out in the open ocean.

I truly can't describe the feeling of swimming in the water completely surrounded by sharks! 🦈
