The Millennium Challenge Corporation - MCC team met with Leader of the Opposition Hon. Shyne Barrow to talk about how the MCC compact will benefit Belizeans. They highlighted the importance of financial and programmatic transparency.
Ambassador Kwan and the MCC delegation visited four schools to discuss how the MCC grant will benefit students across the country. They visited Maud Williams High School and Edward P. Yorke High School, along with the Grant Aided Managing Authority of Schools (GAMAS), to learn about the unique challenges facing schools in Belize. They also visited Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School to better understand the root causes that lead to low enrollment into secondary schools.
Improving education is a key component of the 5-year US $125 million grant agreement between MCC and Belize.

It’s official! 🤝 The MCC Compact has been signed and Belize will move forward on the objectives outlined in the US $125 million grant – improving education and modernizing the energy sector in Belize. The Compact is a prime example of the strong 🇺🇸-🇧🇿 partnership in action. We look forward to all that we will accomplish together over these coming five years!

The 🇺🇸 and 🇧🇿 are proud to partner together to help design Belize’s energy future.
The MCC team met with officials from the Ministry of Public Utilities , Energy, Logistics & E-Governance and the Public Utilities Commission Belize to talk about the U.S. investment into Belize’s energy capabilities. The scope of the project will include technical and supervisory support for utility scale solar power projects, funding to facilitate new solar power purchase agreements, and significant modernization of the electrical grid, including battery energy storage systems, to accommodate variable renewable energy.
Ambassador Kwan, Millennium Challenge Corporation - MCC CEO Alice Albright, and the MCC team had a great meeting with Minister of Education Francis Fonseca, Chief Executive Officer Dian Maheia, and Chief Education Officer Yolanda Gongora. Of the US $125 million, 80 percent is dedicated to education, underscoring the United States' commitment to promoting equitable access to high-quality education.

Ambassador Kwan attended the handover ceremony of the renovation of the general ward at the Western Regional Hospital, updated and improved with support from the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Humanitarian Assistance Program. The US $1.1 Million refurbished ward will improve the Government of Belize’s ability to render life-saving care to Belizeans in need.
